8 Things in Your Closet You Should Throw Away This Week

We’ve all been there—standing in front of our closet, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of clothes, shoes, and accessories we’ve accumulated over the years. It’s kind of like a game of Tetris gone wrong; there’s just too much stuff crammed in, and you can’t find the pieces that actually matter. If you’re feeling the urge to declutter but don’t know where to start, I’ve got you covered. Here are eight things you should throw away this week. Trust me, your closet will thank you.

1. Clothes You Haven’t Worn in Over a Year

Let’s face it: if those jeans haven’t seen the light of day since last summer’s BBQ, they probably never will. Clothes that hang in your closet without being worn are just taking up space. Whether it’s a size you’ll never fit into again or that trendy top you bought on a whim but ended up hating, it’s time to let go. Donate them or sell them; someone else will be thrilled to have them, and you’ll feel a weight lift off your shoulders.

2. Items with Tags Still Attached

We’ve all done it—bought something with the best intentions and then let it languish in the closet. Those unworn pieces with tags still attached are like little reminders of our past shopping sprees (and perhaps poor impulse control). If it’s been more than six months and you haven’t worn it yet, chances are you won’t. Let it go and make room for something you’ll actually use!

3. Anything That Doesn’t Fit

Let’s be honest: holding onto clothes that don’t fit is like keeping a diary filled with regrets. Whether it’s too tight or a bit too loose, if it doesn’t make you feel good every time you put it on, it’s time to say goodbye. There’s no shame in your size changing over the years. Instead of clinging to the past, embrace the present and let those clothes find a new home.

4. Shoes That Hurt Your Feet

Ah, the infamous “cute but painful” shoes. We’ve all been seduced by a pair of heels that promised to make our legs look fabulous but left us limping home. If you’ve got shoes that make you want to cry (or at least whine a little), it’s time to release them back into the wild. Life’s too short for uncomfortable shoes! Swap them out for pairs that make you feel like you can conquer the world.

5. Clothes with Stains or Holes

Accidents happen, but if you’ve got clothes that look like they’ve been through a food fight or a nail-biting battle with your cat, it might be time to toss them. Sure, you could try to repair them, but let’s be real: how often do we actually get around to that? Save yourself the trouble and let those unfortunate garments go. You deserve a closet full of items that spark joy, not uncertainty!

6. Trendy Pieces You’ll Never Wear Again

Fashion is fun, but it also has a funny way of dating itself. If you’ve got items in your closet that were once the hottest trends but now make you cringe, it’s time to let them go. Remember that neon windbreaker you thought was “totally rad”? Yeah, it’s probably not coming back, and even if it does, you won’t want to wear it. Out with the old, in with the new!

7. Duplicates of Items You Don’t Need

Do you really need five plain white T-shirts? Unless you’re a fashion influencer who does laundry once a month, probably not. Duplicates can take up valuable space and make it harder to see what you actually have. Pick your favorites and let the extras go. Your closet will look cleaner, and you’ll have an easier time picking out outfits!

8. Sentimental Items That No Longer Spark Joy

We all have that one shirt from college or a dress that reminds us of a fabulous night out. But if those items just sit in your closet collecting dust and don’t bring you joy anymore.
