I Realized I’ve Been Living Around Other People’s Expectations

You know that moment when you’re standing in front of your closet, staring at a sea of clothes, and suddenly realize you don’t actually like any of them? It’s like a mini existential crisis wrapped in a fashion faux pas. Well, I recently had one of those moments, but it wasn’t about clothes. It was about my entire life. I realized I’ve been living around other people’s expectations, and let me tell you, it’s a bit like wearing someone else’s shoes—uncomfortable and totally not me.

The Weight of Expectations

From a young age, we’re bombarded with expectations—family, friends, society. “You should pursue a stable job.” “You need to settle down by a certain age.” “Why aren’t you on social media?” It’s like having a set of invisible weights strapped to our backs, slowly pulling us down while we’re just trying to keep our heads above water. I’ve spent years trying to please everyone else, and honestly, I was exhausted.

Think about it: how many times have you done something just to make someone else happy? Maybe you’ve chased after a degree that didn’t set your heart on fire or taken a job that felt more like a life sentence than a career path. I was guilty of this too. I was so focused on ticking boxes that I forgot to ask myself what I actually wanted.

A Little Nudge from Life

For me, the wake-up call came during a particularly mundane day at work. I was sitting at my desk, staring blankly at spreadsheets, when I heard a coworker talking about their dream of traveling the world and starting a business. Suddenly, my coffee tasted bitter, and my heart sank. Why was I sitting here? Was this what I wanted, or was I just following the well-trodden path others had laid out for me?

That evening, I went home and did something radical. I pulled out a journal—yes, the one gathering dust at the back of my drawer—and decided to reflect. I jotted down everything I felt passionate about. It was a mix of writing, traveling, and a deep-seated desire to explore different cultures. I realized I hadn’t even given myself permission to dream. Oops!

Taking Back My Life

So, where do you go from that lightbulb moment? For me, it started with small changes. I began asking myself, “What do I want?” instead of “What should I do?” It’s a simple switch, but it’s powerful. I started saying no to things that didn’t spark joy—like those endless brunches that felt more like obligations than fun outings. And guess what? My friends didn’t revolt; they actually respected my choices. Shocking, right?

Next, I took a hard look at my career. I carved out time to explore writing, which I had always loved but never pursued seriously. After a few months of dabbling, I realized that sharing my thoughts and experiences was more fulfilling than any corporate ladder rung I’d ever climbed. Now, I’m not saying everyone should quit their 9-to-5 and become a nomadic writer (although that sounds pretty dreamy). But finding a little corner of your life where you can be authentically you is priceless.

Embracing the Messy Journey

Now, let’s be real—embracing your true self isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There are days when I still feel the pull of expectations. “What if I disappoint someone?” “What if I fail?” But here’s the kicker: the more I lean into my passions, the more I realize that living authentically brings its own kind of fulfillment, even if it’s messy and unpredictable.

Plus, pursuing what lights you up often leads to unexpected joy. I’ve met new friends who share my interests, discovered new hobbies, and even had some hilarious misadventures along the way (like that time I tried learning to salsa dance and nearly took out an entire line of unsuspecting dancers!).

The Joy of Living for Yourself

So, if you’re out there feeling the weight of everyone’s expectations, take a breath. Ask yourself what truly makes you happy. It might feel daunting at first, but trust me, the journey is worth it. You’ll find that the world opens up when you start living for yourself. It’s like finally getting to wear those funky shoes you’ve always wanted—comfortable and totally you!
