I Grew Up Hearing These 4 Rock Songs Everywhere — Now They’re Forgotten

It’s funny how some songs become the soundtrack of our lives, echoing through our childhoods and teenage years, only to vanish into the ether as time marches on. If you grew up in the ’80s or ’90s, you probably remember hearing certain rock anthems blaring from car radios, at school dances, or during those infamous summer road trips. But now, it feels like those songs have become ghosts of a bygone era. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit four rock songs that, for better or worse, have slipped into obscurity.

1. “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake

Ah, “Here I Go Again.” This iconic power ballad was practically a rite of passage for every kid with a boombox and a dream of performing a dramatic lip-sync in front of the bathroom mirror. With its unmistakable keyboard intro and David Coverdale’s soaring vocals, it was the anthem for anyone who believed in redemption and second chances. But let’s be real — when was the last time you heard it on the radio? It’s like it took a one-way ticket to rock ’n’ roll heaven and forgot to send a postcard.

Interestingly, the song was a huge hit in the late ’80s, but as the years rolled on, it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle of newer, glitzier tracks. It’s sad, really. I mean, who wouldn’t want to belt out that chorus while stuck in traffic? We need a revival, people!

2. “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi

If you were a fan of big hair and even bigger ballads, Bon Jovi was practically your best friend. “You Give Love a Bad Name” was the kind of song that made you want to throw your hands in the air and dance like nobody was watching — or at least like your parents weren’t judging you from the kitchen. It had everything: catchy hooks, a killer guitar solo, and that unmistakable Jersey grit.

But despite its anthemic qualities, it seems like this classic has been relegated to the “oldies” playlist, right next to elevator music. The other day, I found myself humming it while washing the dishes, and I realized how much I missed rock songs that actually made you feel something. If only I could convince a local bar to host a retro night dedicated to Bon Jovi — I’d be first in line!

3. “Cherry Pie” by Warrant

“Cherry Pie” might not be the most profound song ever written, but it sure was catchy! I mean, who could forget that ridiculous music video featuring a pie and a lot of, um, suggestive imagery? It was a staple of every party and a guilty pleasure that somehow didn’t feel guilty at all. It was just fun, and let’s face it, sometimes you need a little frivolity in your life.

But fast forward to today, and it’s like “Cherry Pie” has taken a permanent vacation. You rarely hear it at bars or on playlists, and I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic. I’d love to see it make a comeback, if only to remind everyone that rock doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes, you just want to have a laugh and enjoy a slice of something sweet.

4. “I Want to Know What Love Is” by Foreigner

Now, let’s talk about “I Want to Know What Love Is.” This is the power ballad of all power ballads. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to reach for the nearest microphone and pour your heart out. With its sweeping melodies and emotional depth, it was a staple at every prom and slow dance. But like so many great things, it seems to have faded into the background noise of pop culture.

Is it too much to ask for a renaissance of those heart-wrenching melodies? I sometimes find myself singing it in the shower, hoping one of my neighbors will join in for a duet. It deserves a revival, if only to remind us that rock music can be as tender as it is powerful.

Final Thoughts

As I reflect on these forgotten rock songs, it strikes me how much they shaped not just the music scene, but our lives. They were the soundtrack to our youthful exuberance, heartaches, and moments of pure joy. Now, as we scroll through endless playlists of new hits, let’s not forget to occasionally dust off the classics.
