Woman Says Her MIL Keeps Buying Giant, Expensive Toys That Don’t Fit in Their Small Apartment, Then Called Her Ungrateful When She Asked for Smaller Gifts Instead

Most grandparents love spoiling their grandkids. But for one mom living in a small apartment, that generosity has turned into a constant battle over space.

She says her mother-in-law keeps buying huge, expensive toys that simply don’t fit in their home—and when she finally asked for smaller gifts, the situation exploded into a family argument.

A Small Apartment With Very Big Toys

The woman explained that she and her husband live with their two young kids—ages five and three—in a modest two-bedroom apartment.

Space is tight, and they’ve told family members that they try to keep large toys to a minimum.

But her mother-in-law has a habit of buying extremely large gifts for the kids every birthday and Christmas.

According to the post, the list includes things like electric ride-on cars, a full drum set, and a giant dollhouse that took up half the living room.

Because there’s simply nowhere to keep them, the family usually ends up storing the toys elsewhere or donating them.

Another Oversized “Surprise”

The latest issue came when the mother-in-law announced she had already purchased another massive present for their son’s upcoming birthday.

This time it was a multi-level train table.

Knowing they had no room for something that large, the mom tried to address the issue gently before the gift even arrived.

She told her mother-in-law the present sounded thoughtful but explained that they literally didn’t have space for something that big and asked if smaller gifts might be better.

That’s when things went sideways.

The Argument That Followed

Instead of understanding the concern, the grandmother reportedly took the request as an insult.

She accused the mom of “looking a gift horse in the mouth” and implied she was being ungrateful for her generosity.

She also said she simply wanted to spoil her grandchildren and accused the mom of depriving them by refusing the gift.

To make things worse, the woman’s husband didn’t back her up.

According to the post, he told her to just accept the gift and deal with it later.

For the mom who already manages the household space, that response made the situation even more frustrating.

Why the Situation Resonated With People

The story struck a chord online because it touches on a common tension in families: when generosity clashes with practicality.

On the surface, the grandmother’s intentions seem kind. She wants to give her grandkids exciting gifts.

But from the parents’ perspective, those gifts are creating stress, clutter, and extra work—especially in a small living space.

Many readers also felt the husband should be the one addressing the problem with his own mother.

Commenters Offered a Simple Solution

Several commenters suggested a workaround that solves the space problem without rejecting the gifts entirely.

“Oh wow! We can’t fit it here so it will have to stay at Grandma’s!”

Others shared that they’ve used the same strategy with relatives who love buying big toys.

“She’ll love playing with it at your house because that’s where it’s going.”

A Boundary—or Just Family Drama?

For the mom who wrote the post, the problem isn’t really about toys.

It’s about feeling like her home and boundaries are being ignored.

Grandparents wanting to spoil kids is common—but when the gifts start taking over the house, even generosity can become a source of tension.
