Group vacations can be some of the best ways to stay connected with friends. But they can also get messy when money gets involved.
That’s exactly what happened with one group of longtime friends who take an annual girls weekend trip together. After a payment drama last year, one woman says she’s now being called petty for asking a friend to settle an old debt before joining the next trip.

A Tradition of Girls Trips
The woman explained that she and a group of about eight to ten friends organize a girls weekend getaway every year.
Their usual setup is simple: they rent a large house and split the lodging and food costs evenly among everyone attending.
For years, the arrangement worked smoothly.
But last year, something happened that changed the group dynamic.
One Friend Never Paid Her Share
According to the post, one woman on last year’s trip never paid her portion of the expenses.
Instead of addressing the issue, she reportedly ghosted the entire group.
To keep things fair, several of the other women ended up splitting her unpaid share so that no single person would be stuck covering the cost.
That meant some of the group essentially paid extra for the trip.
And then they didn’t hear from the friend again for months.
A Surprise Return
When the group began planning this year’s trip a few weeks ago, the same friend suddenly reappeared.
She apologized to everyone and asked if she could join the trip again.
She also promised that she would repay what she owed from the previous year.
The group was divided.
Some were open to giving her another chance, while others were more skeptical after the way she disappeared.
Because three of the women had covered the unpaid bill—including the woman who booked this year’s rental—the group decided those three should make the final call.
The Conditions That Sparked Debate
The woman agreed the friend could come, but with two clear conditions.
First, she had to repay the money she owed from last year.
Second, she needed to pay her portion for the upcoming trip by the end of March, even though the trip itself isn’t until May.
For her, the rule was simple: after being burned once, she wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again.
Most of the group agreed with the plan.
But two of the friend’s closest allies didn’t.
They argued that asking for the payment so far in advance was petty and unnecessary.
Why the Story Struck a Nerve
The situation sparked strong reactions online because it touches on a familiar problem: group trips where one person doesn’t pay their share.
Many readers pointed out that the people calling the request “petty” weren’t the ones who had to cover the unpaid bill.

“Funny how the people calling you petty aren’t the ones who had to cover her bill.”
Others said the rule was simply common sense after what happened.

“She can come if she repays last year and prepays this year. Otherwise, no.”
An Update From the Group
In an update, the woman said the situation ultimately worked out.
The friend repaid the money owed from last year to the people who covered the cost.
The group also agreed that everyone will now pay their share of lodging before the trip going forward.
After one expensive lesson, it seems the annual girls weekend now comes with one new rule: pay up first.
