Woman Says Her Dad Invited Her to Birthday Dinner on Her Actual Birthday, but Her Husband Says She Should Refuse Because It’s “His Job” to Take Her Out

A woman says a simple birthday dinner invitation from her dad has unexpectedly turned into an argument with her husband.

The reason? Her husband believes it’s his responsibility to take her out on her birthday — and he thinks it will make him look bad if someone else does.

The only problem is that he’ll be at work that night.

A Birthday Plan That Seemed Simple

The woman, 37, explained that her father invited her to dinner on her actual birthday.

She said it felt like an easy yes because she didn’t have any other plans for that evening.

Her daughters will be with their father that night, and her husband is scheduled to work.

Since everyone else was busy, she thought a quiet dinner with her dad would be a nice way to spend the evening.

But her husband didn’t see it that way.

Her Husband’s Objection

According to her, her husband told her she shouldn’t go.

His reasoning wasn’t about logistics — it was about appearances.

He told her that taking his wife out on her birthday is a husband’s responsibility, and he would look bad if her father ended up doing it instead.

He also felt offended that her dad didn’t mention inviting the rest of the family, even though they weren’t available.

The Compromise He Suggested

Instead of the dinner, her husband suggested a different plan.

He wants her to tell her dad she can meet for lunch instead — with him included.

But that plan would still fall on her birthday, and it would require changing the original invitation from her dad.

She’s now wondering whether she’d be wrong to simply accept the dinner invitation.

Why Many People Said She Did Nothing Wrong

Most readers felt the situation was straightforward.

It’s her birthday — and her husband is the one who isn’t available.

“Why can’t your husband just take you out another evening?”

Others pointed out that if celebrating her birthday was truly his responsibility, he could have planned something ahead of time.

User NoMoreFruit added:

“If he wanted to take you out, he would have made a plan.”

Many also felt his reaction seemed more about protecting his ego than celebrating her.

User lazy_buffering joked:

“So the compromise is that everyone is unhappy except his ego?”

A Birthday That Became About Someone Else

In the end, the woman says she simply wants to enjoy a quiet birthday dinner with her father since no one else is available that night.

But the disagreement has left her wondering whether saying yes would make her the problem.

For many readers, though, the answer was clear: it’s her birthday — and she should spend it however she wants.
