Man Says His Girlfriend Threw a Plate at His Head During an Argument, So He Refused to Buy a House With Her and Ended the Relationship

A man says his ex-girlfriend is blaming him for the end of their relationship — after he refused to move forward with buying a house together.

But he says the decision came after a fight that escalated into violence.

A Relationship Already Under Strain

The man, 27, explained that his relationship with his girlfriend, 26, had been unstable for some time.

The couple share a 2½-year-old son together and had broken up several times before.

One of their biggest sources of conflict was money.

According to him, his girlfriend frequently sent him listings for houses in the €650,000–€750,000 range and talked about expensive renovations. While he earns a decent income, he felt those plans were financially risky.

That disagreement about their future kept resurfacing.

The Argument That Escalated

One afternoon the tension boiled over.

He says his girlfriend was already upset about something he had said earlier in the day, and the argument continued into the evening.

Another dispute started when he noticed their toddler had been left alone in the bath for around 45 minutes while she was in another room on the phone and folding laundry.

During the confrontation, she allegedly tried to spray soapy water in his face.

He admits he reacted by pushing or kicking her away, which he says he regrets.

But the situation didn’t end there.

The Conversation That Ended the Relationship

The following day they sat down to discuss the future of their relationship.

That’s when he told her he no longer wanted to buy a house together.

He said the constant arguments and instability made such a major financial commitment feel unsafe.

According to him, that’s when things turned physical again.

He says she threw a plate at his head in front of their toddler.

The plate missed him but shattered a glass lamp, leaving him with cuts on his hands.

At that moment, he says he decided the relationship was over and asked her to leave.

What Happened Next

His ex-girlfriend later moved back in with her mother, about 130 kilometers away, and took their son with her.

Since then, he says she has been telling others that he ruined the relationship by refusing to buy a house and commit to their future.

Despite the breakup, he says he still sees his son every Wednesday and every other weekend and plans to support him financially.

Why Many People Said He Made the Right Call

Most readers believed refusing to buy a house together was a reasonable response given the circumstances.

User couldbemage summed it up bluntly:

“You said the relationship was too unstable, and she immediately confirmed that it was.”

Others pointed out that throwing a plate during an argument crosses the line into physical violence.

Some readers were even more concerned about the toddler being left alone in the bath for such a long time.

“Do you want your son to grow up around that kind of behavior?”

A Costly Commitment Avoided

For the man, the breakup wasn’t just about the plate incident — it was about recognizing that their relationship wasn’t stable enough for something as serious as buying a home together.

Now he says he’s focused on co-parenting and staying involved in his son’s life.

But with his ex telling others that he destroyed their future, he’s left wondering whether walking away from both the relationship and the house plans really made him the bad guy.
