New Mom Says Her Downstairs Neighbor Complained Her Newborn Cries Too Much and Even Bangs on the Ceiling at Night

Living in an apartment building means dealing with the normal sounds of other people — footsteps, conversations, maybe even the occasional party. But one new mom says her neighbors seem to believe that one particular sound shouldn’t exist at all: her newborn baby crying.

Now the situation has escalated into late-night ceiling banging and complaints about “disturbing the peace.”

The Quiet Apartment That Worked — Until the Baby Arrived

The woman explained that she and her husband moved into a small apartment complex about eight months ago.

At the time, she was pregnant, so finding a place that was both affordable and quiet felt like the perfect fit.

Everything went smoothly at first.

But two months ago, their daughter was born — and like most newborns, she cries.

Sometimes it happens at night. Sometimes during the day. And sometimes at unpredictable hours when the exhausted parents are already running on very little sleep.

The couple says they do everything they can to calm their baby as quickly as possible.

But their downstairs neighbor apparently isn’t satisfied with that.

The First Complaint: A Note on the Door

About three weeks after bringing their baby home, the couple found a note taped to their apartment door.

It read:

“Control your baby. Some of us have jobs and need sleep.”

The new mom initially thought the message was a joke.

After all, newborns cry — it’s how they communicate.

Still, the couple continued doing what most new parents do: feeding the baby, rocking her, and pacing the apartment at all hours trying to soothe her.

Then the Ceiling Banging Started

The situation escalated one night around 3 a.m.

While the mother was trying to calm her crying baby, someone downstairs began repeatedly banging on the ceiling with what sounded like a broom handle.

The sudden noise startled her while she was already exhausted and holding the baby.

And it didn’t stop there.

A Face-to-Face Complaint

A few days later, the neighbor knocked on their door during the afternoon.

He complained about “constant noise” and claimed the baby crying was “disturbing the peace.”

The husband responded bluntly that they have a newborn and are doing their best.

But the neighbor still wasn’t satisfied.

According to the mom, he suggested they should “take the baby somewhere else when it cries.”

That suggestion left the parents confused.

Where exactly are they supposed to go with a crying newborn — outside in the middle of the night?

The Situation Keeps Escalating

Since that conversation, the neighbor has reportedly started banging on the ceiling almost every time the baby cries overnight.

Last week, they even slipped another note under the door warning that if the noise continues, they’ll report the couple to building management.

Now the new mom says she feels anxious every time her daughter cries, anticipating the loud banging that may follow.

People Had Mixed Reactions

When the story was shared online, reactions were split.

Some readers said the neighbors were being completely unreasonable, arguing that crying babies are simply part of living in an apartment building.

One commenter wrote:

“It’s a newborn. If they can’t deal with normal life noise, they should move.”

Others, however, sympathized with the neighbor’s lack of sleep, pointing out that apartment living can be difficult when sounds carry between units.

A few suggested possible compromises, such as moving to a different room in the apartment when the baby cries or adding rugs or sound-dampening materials to reduce noise.

A Stressful Situation for Everyone

For now, the family is stuck navigating the tension.

The mother says she understands that constant crying can be frustrating for neighbors — but newborns don’t come with an off switch.

And with both sleep deprivation and neighbor complaints piling up, the situation has made an already exhausting stage of life even more stressful.
