Student Says Partner Keeps Showing Up Late With Excuses Like “My Alarm Didn’t Go Off” And It Finally Blew Up

In a world where deadlines loom and accountability is paramount, one student has found herself at the end of her rope with a partner who seems to have an endless supply of excuses. The saga started innocently enough—a friendship that blossomed into an academic alliance. But as the thesis project progressed, it became clear that their contrasting attitudes toward responsibility were on a collision course.

The student, a 26-year-old woman (let’s refer to her as Sarah), had no choice but to partner with her friend, Mary, a 24-year-old who embodies a markedly different approach to both life and work. Sarah describes herself as someone who values punctuality and effort, highlighting her long commute that requires a steadfast commitment to getting to the university on time. In sharp contrast, Mary, who lives just two tram stops away, consistently arrives late, armed with a variety of excuses that seem to grow more creative with each passing day.

“I didn’t wake up on time,” “My alarm didn’t go off,” and “I fell asleep without meaning to”—these have become Mary’s trademark lines. While Sarah has made a habit of persevering through her own hardships, including sickness and sleepless nights, Mary’s tendency to drag her feet has started to wear thin on Sarah. The constant tardiness has led to a growing sense of frustration that ultimately reached a boiling point.

The moment that proved to be the breaking point came when the duo had a crucial meeting with one of their professors. After a mix-up regarding the schedule, Mary panicked the day before, thinking she had missed their appointment. Sarah reassured her that the meeting was still on for the next day and urged her to be on time. Unfortunately, when the day arrived, Mary was nowhere to be found, and Sarah was left scrambling to make sense of what was happening.

Despite multiple attempts to reach her, Mary didn’t answer her phone. Panic set in for Sarah as she realized that the samples needed for their project were in Mary’s possession, making it impossible for her to go to the meeting without her. Just 30 minutes before their appointment, Mary finally texted Sarah, claiming she hadn’t woken up. Although she managed to show up in time, the anxiety and stress of the situation took a serious toll on Sarah’s well-being.

“I was absolutely pissed,” Sarah recalled. “I felt like my time didn’t matter.” To make matters worse, upon arriving, Mary provided no apology, leaving Sarah to wonder if her feelings were even acknowledged. When Mary noticed Sarah’s frustration, she inquired about what was bothering her. Instead of taking responsibility, Mary launched into a series of justifications, brushing off some incidents and denying others entirely. It was evident that their communication was breaking down, and the friendship felt considerably strained.

In the days that followed, Mary made a brief effort to show up on time. However, this newfound punctuality didn’t last long. The cycle of excuses began anew, culminating in yet another late arrival just as they were about to start a critical lab session. Without fail, Mary texted Sarah 30 minutes before, claiming she wouldn’t be able to make it on time due to personal reasons. This latest episode left Sarah feeling disheartened and betrayed, as the trust in their partnership began to erode.

While Sarah has come to appreciate the importance of communication and teamwork, she couldn’t shake the feeling of exasperation with Mary’s lack of commitment. The repeated pattern of tardiness has created a rift in their friendship, raising questions about accountability and mutual respect in academic collaborations. With deadlines looming and the pressure mounting, Sarah is left wondering how to navigate their working relationship moving forward.

Although many friendships encounter rough patches, this particular instance raises thought-provoking questions about the balance between empathy and accountability. While everyone has off days, the ongoing nature of Mary’s excuses has left Sarah feeling undervalued and frustrated. As they continue their academic journey, it remains to be seen whether they can find common ground or if the tension will ultimately lead them down separate paths.
