A recent experience at a hamam in Cappadocia has left a group of American women feeling disrespected and frustrated. The women, who had planned a relaxing trip to the famous bathhouse, encountered an unexpected and inappropriate situation that marred their experience.

The ordeal began when five friends visited the Alaaddin Hamam, a popular destination for tourists seeking traditional Turkish baths. Initially, everything seemed to be going smoothly, with the women enjoying their treatments. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted when two male staff members entered the women’s designated area to remove trash. Having previously visited hamams in cities like Dubai, Istanbul, and Amman, the group found this behavior alarming and confirmed with the staff that no men were supposed to enter their private area. The staff assured them that their space was exclusively for women.
However, things took a turn for the worse once their treatments ended. As the women got up, they were confronted with an unexpected sight: a family, consisting of a man, woman, and young boy, taking pictures in the hamam area. To make matters worse, two naked men were also present, receiving their treatments openly within the same space reserved for the women. This violation of privacy immediately raised concerns for the group.
The women approached the staff to address the issue, expecting some form of acknowledgment or resolution, but were met with various dismissive responses. One staff member claimed that they hadn’t specifically requested to avoid seeing men, despite having expressed their discomfort. Another staff member mentioned that since the group had already completed their service, there was nothing they could do about the situation. A third person suggested that the women simply accept the experience and move on. Adding to their frustration, a male staff member repeatedly instructed one of the women to “be quiet” while avoiding eye contact, making the situation feel even more disrespectful.
As tensions escalated, the group learned that the staff member trying to quiet them was the social media manager for the hamam, which raised eyebrows about the establishment’s priorities. Meanwhile, another staff member proceeded to film the argument from the lobby, prompting the women to demand the footage be deleted. When they finally reached the front desk manager for help, he expressed reluctance to grant a refund, explaining that it could jeopardize his position. He also acknowledged his mistake in allowing the family to wander into the women’s area without proper oversight.
The situation finally shifted when the owner of the establishment was brought into the conversation. He admitted that men should not have been in the women’s area and agreed that filming was unacceptable. Unfortunately, this clarity came too late for the group, who felt that the hamam had underestimated their expectations as American women and assumed they would be unconcerned by the presence of men. They were indeed wrong.
In the aftermath of the incident, the hamam offered the women half of their money back and a chance for a complimentary treatment. However, feeling disillusioned and hurt by the events that had transpired, the group chose to leave instead, overwhelmed by emotion.
This experience highlights an ongoing concern for travelers in tourist hotspots like Cappadocia. While many visitors appreciate the beauty and hospitality of Turkey, some have noted a troubling trend among local businesses. Disregarding customer comfort and experiences seems to be a recurring theme, as illustrated by comments from other travelers in the community. One user expressed frustration over businesses prioritizing short-term gains over customer satisfaction, leading to a lack of accountability and care. Another user, a male traveler, noted discomfort with the idea of being nude in front of strangers, emphasizing the need for more sensitivity in such establishments.
As the group reflects on their experience, they hope to share their story to raise awareness about expectations when visiting cultural sites like hamams. While many travelers are eager to embrace new experiences, it’s essential for institutions to maintain a level of professionalism and respect towards all clients.
