Volunteer Stage Tech Kept Giving Late and Demanding Artists Exactly What They Asked For, Even When Their Own Requests Blew Up in Their Faces on the Spot

In the world of live performances, where creativity meets execution, volunteers often find themselves in a unique position of power and responsibility. Take, for instance, the journey of a volunteer stage technician in the Netherlands. Amongst the vibrant energy of small markets, this technician transforms challenges into comedic moments, demonstrating how compliance, even under duress, can lead to unexpected hilarity.

Many artists don’t realize the intricate dance that stage management entails. They might not think twice about sending their music files just hours before the event—a delay that has become somewhat of a running joke in the tech community. Despite this, our dedicated stage tech has found a way to sidestep friction by embracing the power of “malicious compliance.” Instead of starting arguments that could jeopardize the performance, they smile, nod, and make it work, even when the requests start to tangentially spiral out of control.

The technician’s memory seems forever marked by a certain singer who demanded a spotlight to enhance her performance. “You know what would be awesome? A spotlight! It would really make me look important!” she announced with excitement. The technician, ever eager to please, immediately clambered up to the truss, armed with a pinspot, and pointed it right at her visage. Alas, the result was far from the artist’s expectations. “AAAHH jeez, that’s bright! I can’t see anything! My eyes!!!” she cried out.

The technician, holding back laughter, gently responded, “Uh, yeah… that’s a spotlight. How else do you think it creates a spot on a dark background? It has to be bright!” The singer’s enthusiasm quickly turned to bewilderment, but the technician was undeterred. It was a learning moment for both parties, but one that the artist might quickly forget once the adrenaline of on-stage performance kicked in.

Another encounter involved a late artist who missed her soundcheck altogether. Time management is crucial in live events, and the technician felt the pressure mounting as they scrambled to set up a sound system without the benefit of pre-performance calibration. The artist, unperturbed by the lack of preparation, insisted on using a string instrument instead of a more forgiving microphone type. The technician knew this choice could lead to complications, but their hands were tied.

With the audience waiting, the tech set up a condenser mic—an option that picks up a broad range of sound, including any unwanted feedback. After dialing in the sound as best as possible, the moment arrived. The artist played her piece with grace, but, inevitably, she declared, “I can’t hear it well enough… can you turn up the volume?”

“Uhm… no?” came the reply, aware that increasing the volume would invite an echoing disaster. “Just turn it up!” she pressed, stubbornly insisting upon her request.

And so, the technician complied, unleashing a piercing whine that echoed through the venue. “WHHHHIIIIEEEEE!” it screeched. “TURN IT DOWN!!” The technician couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony of the situation. With each encounter, this stage tech navigated the whims of performers with a grin, embracing the chaos that comes with the territory.

There’s no denying the often humorous dynamics that unfold behind-the-scenes in live performances. Artists may frequently overlook the crucial role that stage technicians play, yet somehow this tech seems to have developed a knack for turning their frustrations into comedic interludes. While the artists rave about their experiences with a “listening” technician, the behind-the-scenes reality paints a different picture—one filled with demands that aren’t always conducive to a smooth show.

This technician’s stories serve as a reminder that in the world of live entertainment, every performance is a collaborative effort. Enjoying the moment often means rolling with the punches while managing an array of unpredictable requests. When the final curtain falls and the audience erupts into applause, it is everyone’s combined efforts that create the magic of live performance, and sometimes, it’s the unexpected moments that become the most memorable.
