Homeowner Says the Gate Company Vanished Mid Job, and Now the Installer From the Shadows Swears He Can Still Fix Everything Before the Other 50 Percent Disappears

Home renovations can quickly turn from a dream project into a homeowner’s nightmare, especially when things don’t go as planned. For one homeowner, this painful reality hit hard when the gate company they’d hired seemingly vanished mid-project, leaving behind a series of issues that were far from trivial. What started as the installation of three custom steel gates turned into an unexpected saga of communication breakdowns and last-minute rescues.

The homeowner initiated the project with confidence, selecting a company that presented itself as professional and reliable. Their large social media presence complemented a promise of quality craftsmanship, leading to a 50% deposit payment for the job. Initial steps of the project seemed promising — the crew arrived to pour a concrete footer while the gates were being fabricated. Everything appeared to be moving in the right direction, but an unforeseen twist was just around the corner.

Without warning, the owner of the company sent an email announcing they were on vacation, with their right-hand man stepping in to oversee the remaining work. The homeowner felt reassured, believing this was just a minor hiccup. However, the reality hit hard on installation day. While the crew promptly installed the gates, it soon became apparent that several details were amiss. From incorrect lock placements on pedestrian gates to a sliding gate that didn’t align properly, issues began stacking up.

What followed was a barrage of concerns: locks that could be easily manipulated from outside, lack of self-closing hinges, damaged stucco that was supposed to be repaired, and even unfastened hardware screws embedded in concrete. To make matters worse, mysterious silicone caulking on the sliding gate raised suspicions of cover-ups rather than careful installation.

Attempts to contact the owner revealed that the company’s email had bounced back, leading the homeowner to discover that the business had closed down entirely. The ‘right-hand man’ was a separate installer with his own low-profile business, which caught the homeowner off guard. However, amidst the chaos, there was one silver lining: the gates themselves looked fantastic, closely resembling the reference photos provided at the outset.

The homeowner documented every issue and approached the installer, laying out their grievances in detail. Much to their relief, the response was prompt and professional. The installer committed to a series of corrective actions: replacing the locks with proper keyed double-cylinder deadbolts, ensuring locks would be keyed alike, fixing the self-closing hinges, hiring a subcontractor for the damaged stucco, and even fabricating a new sliding gate that would sit flush against the wall. Communication improved dramatically, and the installer appeared genuinely dedicated to rectifying the situation.

With 50% of the payment still in hand, the homeowner found some leverage in this unexpected twist. They wondered whether it was wise to trust the installer to follow through, especially given his responsiveness. Concerns lingered about whether or not to initiate a credit card chargeback, despite still holding that substantial payment. And, in the back of their mind, the looming question remained regarding how any warranty would be honored now that the original company was defunct.

As the homeowner navigated this complex terrain, they faced difficult decisions. Should they extend trust to the installer and allow him to take the reins on the corrections, or should they be more cautious in light of the upheaval? Would it be prudent to engage the credit card company even with the remaining balance? As the dust settled from that initial chaos, the homeowner resolved to wait for the completion of the fixes before raising warranty concerns. After all, they had meticulously documented every misstep, providing them with a paper trail to hold accountable the remaining parties involved.

In a world where home improvement projects can go sideways in an instant, this homeowner’s experience serves as a reminder of the challenges faced during renovation journeys. As they stand at a crossroads, weighing trust against caution, the search for resolution continues.
