Renter Wants Travel Rewards From His Biggest Monthly Bill, But His Landlord Still Only Accepts Checks “The Old Fashioned Way”

In today’s fast-paced technological world, it’s hard to believe that some landlords are stuck in the past. For one tenant in Oregon, the struggle is real. He has made it clear that he wants to leverage his travel rewards credit card for his largest monthly expense: rent. Unfortunately, his landlord has other ideas, insisting on “the old-fashioned way”—accepting payments only via check.

For many renters, monthly bills are a significant part of their budget, and finding ways to maximize benefits from these expenses is smart financial planning. This particular renter has a travel rewards credit card that allows him to earn points through everyday expenses, making his desire to pay rent on the card completely understandable. After all, why not turn that hefty monthly payment into travel rewards?

The issue, however, lies in the landlord’s rigid payment guidelines. With a firm stance on only accepting checks, this landlord is forcing their tenant to resort to traditional payment methods, effectively stifling any chance to earn rewards on his rent payments. Each month, the renter finds himself grappling with the outdated payment system, feeling that he’s missing out on valuable points just because his landlord isn’t on board with modern payment options.

This predicament raises a broader question that renters everywhere can relate to: Why do some landlords cling to outdated systems? For many, the answer often lies in a mix of tradition and security concerns. Accepting checks can feel safer for some landlords, who might worry about the potential for fraud. Others may not be familiar with newer payment processing services or simply prefer to keep things as they have always been done. However, in a time when digital payment methods are increasingly becoming the norm, sticking solely to checks can feel frustrating and impractical for tenants.

For the renter in Oregon, this situation is exacerbated because he is dedicated to maximizing every financial opportunity. His attempts to suggest alternative payment methods to his landlord, like electronic transfers, have consistently fallen on deaf ears. The landlord’s reluctance to adapt is leaving the renter feeling powerless as he watches his potential travel points slip away each month.

Yet there might be a solution for tenants dealing with similar circumstances. Several online platforms allow individuals to pay their rent via credit card, where the platform pays the landlord via check or bank transfer. Although many of these services charge a convenience fee (which can eat into the rewards earned), it may still be a viable option for those desperate to earn points, miles, or cash back on their largest bill.

Though not ideal, these platforms can provide a workaround that allows renters to use their credit cards without changing their landlord’s payment preferences. Many of these services offer a straightforward process: the renter inputs their rent amount, pays with a credit card through the platform, and the service then issues a check to the landlord. This setup creates a bridge between the landlord’s old-fashioned ways and the renter’s modern payment preferences.

Another alternative is negotiating with the landlord. While this renter has already tried and failed, it may be worth revisiting the conversation with more compelling arguments. Many landlords are open to feedback from their tenants, especially if they see a win-win situation. If the tenant can present a secured method for payment, emphasizing the benefits for both himself and the landlord (like timely payments and the convenience of digital transactions), this could lead to a productive discussion.

As the rental landscape continues to evolve, the preference for digital payments over checks is likely to become more common. For now, renters in similar situations must balance their desire to earn rewards with the limitations set by their landlords. While the old-fashioned way may work for some, the growing demand for flexibility in rental payments might eventually force landlords to adapt.

As this story illustrates, the clash between traditional payment methods and modern consumer wishes is ongoing. For those who find themselves in similar circumstances, remaining proactive and seeking creative solutions is key. Whether it’s utilizing an online payment service or advocating for change with their landlord, renters have options available to them even when faced with resistance.
