Puerto Rican Student Says Friends Keep Calling Everything She Does “White,” Even Though She’s Begging Them To Be Original

A Puerto Rican student has voiced her frustration over her friends’ relentless jokes about her skin tone, calling her “white” despite sharing the same Hispanic background. The poster shared her experiences on a popular online platform, revealing how these comments have begun to wear her down, highlighting a clash between cultural identity and personal expression.

She described a playful environment among her friends, characterized by teasing that wasn’t intended to hurt. “As most friends do, we tease each other constantly, nothing purposefully harmful with an intent to hurt the other,” she wrote. However, she pointed out that whenever it came to her, the humor was always the same: comments about her being “white.” With her family being entirely Puerto Rican, she recounted, “I’m just pale because: My mom looks white as shit, I don’t go outside literally ever, I hide from the sun whenever I can.”

Her irritation grows when her friends attribute her interests and behaviors to her skin color. For instance, when she mentioned enjoying budgeting, they dismissed it with “It’s a white people thing. It’s because you’re white.” Even a simple wave to her friends’ parents was met with a joke about Hispanic parents being “built different.” These repetitive comments have left her feeling alienated within her own cultural circle. “I guess I’m just NOT Hispanic because I’m pale??” she wondered, expressing a profound sense of displacement.

While the casual teasing might be harmless in intention, it sacrifices originality for an easy punchline. The poster craves creativity in how her friends choose to engage with her. “Jesus Christ, I’m begging you to be creative,” she pleaded, emphasizing that their jokes have become monotonous. Even when faced with unrelated situations—like a toe-stubbing incident—her friends still managed to link it back to her skin color, saying, “At least my food has flavor and seasoning,” which only deepened her frustration.

As the poster navigates this recurring issue, she feels increasingly distanced from her friends, who seem to have reduced her identity to just one characteristic. The poster reflected on the absurdity of her situation with dismay, saying, “I feel like one of those people who are like ‘oh I’m actually 0.5% Spanish soooo I’m Hispanic,’ like no—I’m ACTUALLY Hispanic.” Her identity, rooted deeply in her Puerto Rican heritage, appears to be overshadowed by her skin tone.

In the wake of her post, readers responded with a mix of empathy and recognition of the absurdity of the situation. Many resonated with her plight, suggesting that her friends’ jokes were indicative of a larger cultural misunderstanding rather than outright malice. Some noted that being “white” in the context of a Hispanic friendship could be seen as an exaggerated stereotype, while others simply acknowledged the need for her friends to diversify their humor.

Despite the supportive responses, the core of the conflict remains unresolved. The poster feels a longing for her friends to acknowledge her individuality beyond her pale skin, a sentiment echoed by those who shared similar experiences. It’s a poignant reminder of the complexities that can arise within friendship dynamics, especially when cultural identity is involved.

In a world rich with diversity, authenticity in friendship means respecting each other’s unique traits without relying on stereotypes. As this student continues to navigate her friendships, the hope remains that her voice will spark a change in how they connect and joke with each other.
