Texas Landlord Was Arrested After Video Showed Him Pulling a Gun on His Own Tenant Over a Dispute That Should Have Never Escalated This Far

A Kitchen Dispute That Ended With a Gun

Police in Denton, Texas were called to a shared rental home in the 2000 block of Scripture Street twice in one day over what started as an argument about kitchen access. Landlord Phillip Young, 68, told officers his student tenant had tried to use the kitchen without paying for kitchen privileges, an arrangement built into the tenant’s rental agreement.

A modest single-story rental house with a front porch.

Hours later, the tenant said Young had pulled a handgun on him and warned him to stay out of the kitchen, and the confrontation was caught on video. Officers noted that Young refused to let them see or secure the weapon during that second visit.

An Admission That Sealed the Case

What turned a he-said, he-said dispute into an arrest was Young’s own words. In a follow-up email to detectives, Young admitted he had in fact thought about shooting his tenant during the confrontation. Young was arrested on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, also flagged as a family violence offense given that landlord and tenant shared the residence. He was released on a $10,000 bond.

Why Shared-Housing Arrangements Carry Extra Risk

Young and his tenant lived in the same house, an increasingly common arrangement in college towns like Denton, home to the University of North Texas. That kind of setup removes the buffer that a property management company normally provides between a landlord’s temper and a tenant’s front door.

What Tenants in Similar Setups Should Take From This

The video is what changed the outcome here. Police found no crime on the first visit, based on statements alone. It was only once there was footage and, ultimately, the landlord’s own written admission that the case became prosecutable.
