Human Remains Discovered in Search for Teen Swept Into Ocean While Fishing

The search for a 19-year-old fisherman swept into the ocean off Kauai has taken a heartbreaking turn, with human remains discovered in the waters near where he vanished. The find has effectively shifted the effort from a frantic rescue operation to a careful, forensic process, as investigators work to confirm whether the remains belong to the missing teen.

Family, friends, and an island community that rallied around the search are now sitting with the grim reality that the outcome they feared is likely here. Even as officials move toward formal identification, the story of what happened to the young fisherman and how people responded around him says a lot about life on the water in Hawaii, and the risks that come with it.

The moment everything changed on Kahili Beach

What began as a routine shoreline fishing outing for two young men off Kauai quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency when a powerful wave pulled them into the surf. Officials say the pair had been fishing near Kahili Beach, a spot also known locally as Rock Quarry, when the ocean suddenly surged and dragged them from the rocks into open water, leaving one badly hurt and the other missing in rough conditions that rescuers described as extremely challenging. First responders were able to reach one of the fishermen and bring him to shore with injuries, while the second, identified as 19-year-old Matthew Kaimana Packard-Asai of Kapaa, disappeared beneath the waves despite an immediate response from emergency crews.

From there, the search scaled up fast. Local firefighters, lifeguards, and federal partners launched a multiagency operation that swept the coastline and nearby waters by air and sea, with teams working in shifts to keep eyes on the surf line as long as daylight and safety allowed. Officials described crews battling strong currents and heavy swell as they combed the area off Kahili Beach, returning again and again to the same stretch of ocean where Matthew Packard-Asai was last seen, while search teams tried to cover as much water as possible before conditions forced them back.

A massive search, then a devastating discovery

As hours turned into days, the operation around Kahili Beach grew into what officials described as a massive, coordinated push to find the missing teenager. The effort mirrored other large-scale coastal searches, including one earlier this year in which Guard crews reported covering approximately 1,047 square miles over 24 hours using multiple aircraft and cutters in a separate case, a reminder of just how wide these searches can stretch when someone vanishes offshore. Around Kauai, responders leaned on that same playbook, deploying boats, aircraft, and shoreline teams in a tight grid around the area where Matthew Packard-Asai was last seen, while family and volunteers watched from the sand and nearby cliffs.

Despite that push, the turning point came when responders located human remains in the water off Kahili Beach, close to where the teen had disappeared. Officials said the discovery was made on a Saturday afternoon, after three days of intensive searching, and that the find prompted commanders to suspend the active search for the 19-year-old fisherman. The remains were recovered from the waters off Kahili Beach, and the multiagency teams that had been scouring the coastline were pulled back as the focus shifted to identification and investigation.

Authorities later confirmed that the remains are believed to be those of Matthew Kaimana Packard-Asai, though they stressed that positive identification would depend on DNA testing and further analysis. In a statement, officials explained that the remains are thought to belong to Packard-Asai but that final confirmation is pending DNA results, and that the investigation into what happened in the surf remains active. Another update echoed that message, noting that the remains are believed to be those of Packard-Asai and that the case is still open as detectives and forensic teams work through the evidence tied to Packard-Asai.

Grief, gratitude, and a community that shows up

For the people who loved him, the technical language around DNA and investigations sits alongside a much more personal loss. Friends and relatives have described Matthew Packard-Asai as a grounded, hard-working teenager who was deeply connected to the ocean and to his home on Kauai. Those close to him painted a picture of a young man who, even at 19, “did well for himself” and carried himself with a quiet confidence that fit right in with the island’s fishing culture, a portrait that has been echoed in reflections on who he was before the accident. The fact that he was out doing something so familiar, casting lines with a friend on a rocky shoreline, only sharpens the sense of shock that such an everyday ritual could end in disaster.

Officials have been careful to balance that grief with public thanks for everyone who tried to bring him home. In statements after the remains were found, leaders said they were deeply grateful to all the agencies and volunteers who worked tirelessly in the search, and they extended heartfelt support to the family as they navigate the days ahead. That message of gratitude was shared as part of the formal announcement that human remains had been found and that the search for the missing 19-year-old fisherman on Kauai was ending, a note that underscored how many people had poured time and energy into looking for the teenager.
