22-Year-Old Escapes Abusive Parents Who Still Hold Their Passport and Control Their College Funding, Then Fears Returning to Campus After Police and School Officials Previously Exposed Their Location and Helped the Family Recapture Them

A 22-year-old is grappling with the aftermath of escaping an abusive family while still facing their control over crucial aspects of her life, including her college funding. The poster, who wishes to remain anonymous, has shared her struggles of feeling guilty and afraid after her escape, especially as she prepares to return to campus for her final year of college. Despite her desire for independence, the shadow of her parents looms large, casting doubts on her freedom and safety.

The difficulties began long before the poster made the harrowing decision to escape. Growing up in a toxic environment filled with emotional and psychological abuse, she often felt invalidated. When she reached 18, a desperate attempt to leave her family resulted in a harrowing experience where authorities tipped off her parents about her location. “They managed to talk the officer out of investigating,” she wrote, highlighting the depth of her helplessness. In a country where child abuse is scarcely addressed by the police, her report led to further entrapment rather than relief.

Now, with her parents still controlling her college funding and holding her passport, the poster is torn between the need to return to campus and the persistent fear of being located by her family. “They’ll rat out me being at campus… they said themselves that they’re able to track my IP,” she expressed. This oppressive situation compounds her anxiety, as she feels they could manipulate school officials just as they did in the past. The specter of being forced to fulfill family obligations, such as sending birthday wishes or maintaining a facade of a caring family for relatives, adds to her daily burden.

As she prepares for a crucial year that could determine her future, the poster confronts her fears head-on, though not without trepidation. She reveals the emotional toll this takes on her, stating, “I feel so alone except for my partner being with me.” His support serves as her only solace, yet the isolation she feels in a society that frowns upon severing family ties amplifies her distress. The potential of her abusers retaliating or regaining control remains a constant threat in her mind.

The community around her has begun to react to her story, resonating with her plight. While some readers were quick to express outrage at the systemic injustices she faces, others focused more on the psychological aspects of her situation. They reflected on the complexities of familial relationships, particularly when abusive dynamics are at play. The reality that her situation could even cause her to flunk classes due to harassment adds a chilling layer to her story. In her words, “They called me 5 minutes before the exam started,” underscoring the lengths to which her family would go to exert control.

As her return to campus approaches, the poster is left grappling with whether she can truly reclaim her independence or if the chains of her past will forever bind her. While she seeks to navigate this treacherous path with the help of her partner, the looming uncertainty of her abusers’ influence remains a significant barrier—a reminder that freedom, though fought for, can feel perilously fragile.
