Woman Says Her Boyfriend Thinks Her Princess Costume for a Bridal Shower Is Ridiculous and Now She’s Going Anyway

A woman’s excitement over a whimsical bridal shower costume turned into an unexpected relationship debate after her boyfriend told her the idea was “immature.” Now the story is getting plenty of attention online, with many people weighing in on whether dressing up as a princess in your late 20s is harmless fun—or something more embarrassing.

The 28-year-old teacher shared her situation on Reddit, explaining that she had been looking forward to a themed bridal shower for one of her friends. But her boyfriend’s reaction left her feeling hurt and confused.

Despite the criticism, she says she’s still planning to show up in full princess style.

A Party Meant to Be Fun

According to the post, the bridal shower has a whimsical, fairy-tale theme. The bride and her friends decided to lean into a “Disney princess” vibe for the event.

For the woman, that sounded perfect.

She loves crafts, face painting, and fairy-tale themed hobbies. During her university years, she regularly attended costume parties and Halloween events with elaborate outfits. Even though her boyfriend of four years knows about her love for dressing up, this time he reacted differently.

When she started planning her outfit, he reportedly questioned the idea immediately.

He asked why she couldn’t “go as a human” instead of a princess and suggested she should choose something more “decent.”

When she explained that the theme was meant to be playful and fun, he doubled down.

According to her, he told her to “be mature” and asked what people would think if his girlfriend showed up “dressed like a 2-year-old.”

The comments caught her off guard.

She said she defended her choice and explained that the event was just a chance for friends to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Still, his reaction left her feeling deflated.

Eventually, he told her he thought the idea was “stupid” but that she could do what she wanted.

She’s Still Going as a Princess

Despite the awkward moment, the woman says she hasn’t changed her plans.

She confirmed in an update that she’s attending the party dressed as Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. She also said she plans to talk with her boyfriend later about why the comments bothered her.

A few hours after the post, she added another update saying he had already apologized for being rude and wanted to discuss the situation more calmly.

But by then, the story had already sparked a lively conversation online.

Why the Story Resonated

Part of the reason the post caught attention is because the disagreement touches on something surprisingly relatable: how adults balance “childlike” fun with expectations about maturity.

For many readers, the real issue wasn’t the costume itself—it was the boyfriend’s reaction.

People pointed out that themed parties, cosplay events, and costume celebrations are common for adults of all ages.

Others felt his comments sounded dismissive, especially since dressing up is already one of her known hobbies.

The story also tapped into a broader conversation about partners supporting each other’s interests—even if they don’t personally enjoy them.

How Reddit Users Reacted

Many commenters strongly supported the woman’s decision to go to the party.

User u/SunshinePalace shared a quote from author C.S. Lewis while defending the idea of playful fun:

“When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Others argued that confidence in enjoying “silly” activities is actually a healthy trait.

“It’s a themed bridal shower, not a board meeting. Let people have fun for a few hours without turning it into a maturity debate.”

Some commenters also suggested the boyfriend might simply be overly concerned with how others perceive him.

User u/toasterchild said:

“He’s terrified people won’t think you’re cool and as a result won’t think he’s cool.”

Meanwhile, plenty of people shared their own love of dressing up—even well into adulthood.

u/shinydoctor commented:

“I’m in my mid-40s and if I get an excuse to dress as a fairy I’m taking it.”

For now, the woman says she plans to enjoy the party and have a conversation with her boyfriend afterward.

And if the internet has anything to say about it, she won’t be the only adult happily wearing a tiara.
