College Student Says Dad Threatened To Report Her Car Stolen, Make Her Quit School, And File A Restraining Order Against Her Boyfriend

A 19-year-old college student is facing escalating tensions with her strict and controlling parents, who have threatened extreme consequences over minor inconveniences such as traffic tickets and academic struggles. The young woman, sharing her story online, describes her parents’ unyielding grip on her life, leaving her feeling trapped and desperate for independence.

The student, in her second year of college, has been grappling with the challenges of both her studies and mental health. Though she has partially financed her own car, her father claims ownership and enforces stringent rules, including tracking her phone, imposing a curfew of 8 PM on weekdays and 9 PM on weekends, and limiting her social interactions. “They think because I’m an only child and they had to provide necessities for me growing up, I owe them,” she explained. These constraints have left her feeling suffocated; she has a job but is barred from picking up extra shifts due to family and church commitments.

After years of struggling with depression, her parents only allowed her to seek medication after her mother was prescribed antidepressants. Last year, when the young woman ran out of her prescription and was financially unable to refill it, her grades suffered as a consequence. The aftermath resulted in her failing a college class, prompting her parents to intervene with financial assistance to help her seek medical care.

However, recent events took a turn for the worse following a traffic incident. While driving to school an hour away from home, the student was pulled over and issued two speeding tickets, resulting in a total of eight points on her license. The fallout prompted her father to react harshly. He indicated that, should the student fail to get the tickets dismissed, she would need to pay him whatever the increased car insurance cost would be, irrespective of whether it left her with enough money for gas.

“I will pay him,” her father warned, “but if you fail to pay me, I will make you quit your job, drop out of college, file a restraining order against your boyfriend, and report your car stolen while you’re out driving so you’ll be arrested and go to jail.” Such extreme measures have left the young woman bewildered and feeling as though her parents are overreacting to what she considers minor mistakes.

As this young student recounts her experiences, many commenters resonated with her predicament, expressing sympathy for her situation. Some readers were quick to point out the overreach displayed by her parents, emphasizing that the threats to report her car stolen and create a rift in her relationships are disproportionate to her infractions. They highlighted not just the financial pressure from her parents but also the emotional toll of living under such strict oversight.

Others noted the concerning aspects of parental control, particularly in the context of her mental health struggles. The student’s experience raises questions about the balance between parental guidance and autonomy for young adults, especially regarding how much responsibility is appropriate for a college student to shoulder while still relying on their parents for essential aspects of life.

In a sea of supportive comments, many focused on the need for her to assert her independence, suggesting that it might be time to set clear boundaries with her parents or explore options for living on her own. Yet, others expressed concern for the ramifications of any actions against her father’s threats, reminding her about the potential long-term consequences of legal actions such as a restraining order.

The young woman’s troubling situation highlights the struggles many face when navigating the complexities of familial obligations and personal freedom. As she continues to juggle her education, mental health, and her relationship with her parents, the unresolved tensions remain palpable, leaving her at a crossroads with uncertain outcomes ahead.
