Failure to clean the dryer is the single biggest factor behind clothes dryer fires, contributing to 34 percent of the roughly 2,900 residential dryer fires reported to U.S. fire departments each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Those fires cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss annually, and the agency’s data shows lint and fiber are the items most often first ignited. Almost all of that risk builds up somewhere you never look: inside the vent hose, in the ductwork running through the wall, or at the exterior cap where exhaust air is supposed to escape. Clearing it out is a quick job, and you don’t need a technician for a standard setup.
Time: about 20 to 30 minutes. Cost: under $30 if you don’t already own a vent brush kit. Difficulty: easy, no special skills required.

What You’ll Need
- A flexible lint brush kit (a rotating rod-and-brush set designed for dryer ducts, typically sold in 12- to 30-foot lengths)
- A vacuum with a hose or crevice attachment
- A screwdriver (for hose clamps)
- Work gloves
- A flashlight
- Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, only if you’re replacing a section
Step 1: Cut the Power, and the Gas Line if Needed
Unplug the dryer before you touch anything. If you have a gas dryer, shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit as well. You’ll be disconnecting hose connections and reaching into ductwork, and you don’t want the machine able to start or gas able to leak while your hands are inside it.
Step 2: Pull the Dryer Out and Disconnect the Vent
Slide the dryer away from the wall far enough to access the back panel. Loosen the clamp or unscrew the fastener holding the vent hose to the exhaust port, then pull the hose free. Set it aside somewhere you can work on it, ideally outdoors or in a garage, since a fair amount of lint is about to come loose.
Step 3: Vacuum the Duct Opening and Lint Trap Housing
With the hose disconnected, use your vacuum’s hose attachment to clean out the exhaust port on the back of the dryer, along with the cavity behind the lint trap. This is where the densest lint usually collects, and it’s closest to the heating element, so it deserves the most attention.
Step 4: Brush Out the Full Length of the Duct
Feed the flexible brush into the vent hose or wall duct and work it through in a twisting motion, pulling it back out and vacuuming the debris it loosens as you go. If the duct is long or has bends, do this from both ends: once from the dryer side, then again from the exterior vent side after removing the outside cap. Keep feeding, twisting, and pulling until the brush comes back mostly clean.
Step 5: Check the Exterior Vent Cap
Go outside and inspect the vent cap where exhaust air exits the house. Clear any lint, leaves, or debris packed around the opening, and check that the flap or louver swings open freely and closes fully on its own. A flap that’s stuck open invites pests and moisture; one that’s stuck shut traps heat and lint gases inside the duct, which the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission flags as one of the checks that matters most for keeping exhaust air actually escaping the house.
Step 6: Reconnect, and Upgrade the Duct If It’s Foil or Plastic
Reattach the vent hose to the dryer and refasten the clamp, then push the dryer back into place, leaving a few inches of clearance so the hose isn’t crushed. If your current duct is flexible foil or plastic accordion hose, this is the point to swap it out. The CPSC recommends replacing that material with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, since accordion ridges trap lint more easily and are prone to kinking, which cuts airflow and lets heat build up. Residential building code goes further, permitting only rigid metal duct for the main run, with flexible metal allowed only as a short transition piece at the connection.
How Often to Repeat This
Once a year covers most households with a short, straight duct run. Clean it more often, closer to every six months, if you have a duct run that snakes through several bends, a family of four or more generating heavy laundry volume, or a gas dryer, since gas units add combustion byproducts to the exhaust stream on top of lint.
When to Call a Professional
Some setups are outside the scope of a home brush kit. Call a dryer-vent cleaning service if your duct run is longer than roughly 25 feet, since a standard brush kit won’t reliably clear debris that far without leaving pockets behind. The same goes for ducts routed through multiple walls, ceilings, or several tight bends, where a rod can get stuck or simply can’t follow the turns. And if your vent terminates on the roof rather than an exterior wall, that’s a job for someone equipped to work safely at height. In any of those cases, an annual professional cleaning is the safer trade for the time you’d spend fighting a duct you can’t fully access.
