Grand Junction, Colorado’s fire department is telling residents that the appliances they lean on all summer, swamp coolers, bathroom exhaust fans, ceiling fans, and clothes dryers, are also the ones sparking fires in local homes when nobody keeps up with them. Local station KJCT8 reported on August 19, 2026 that the Grand Junction Fire Department had responded to a handful of swamp-cooler-related fires over the summer, and that public information officer Dirk Clingman explained how age, dust, and skipped maintenance let these units’ motors and fans overheat until they ignite. According to the station’s reporting, Clingman pointed to clanking or grinding noises from a swamp cooler as a sign a motor or bearing is already under strain, and flagged bathroom and ceiling fans as risks because they collect lint and dust that can smolder against an overheating motor, often out of sight inside a ceiling. Dryers made the list too, since lint building up in places homeowners rarely check can ignite around the motor or heating element. None of these appliances are inherently dangerous. They just need the maintenance most households only think about after something starts to smell hot.
1. Swamp coolers (evaporative coolers)
Plan on two service points each cooling season: one at startup and one mid-season. Cooling pads lose absorbency and collect mineral scale over a summer, so most manufacturers recommend replacing them once or twice a season rather than letting cooling efficiency degrade. Champion/Essick’s owner’s manual for its evaporative coolers also calls for pulling the water pump at startup, disassembling and cleaning it, and spinning the impeller by hand to confirm it turns freely before reinstalling it. While you’re in there, check the float valve so the reservoir fills to the right level instead of running dry or overflowing, and inspect belts and bearings, since a loose belt or dry bearing can create the friction the fire department is warning about. Because these units sit outside and take on moisture all season, look over the electrical connections and cord for corrosion before you rely on the unit again. When the season ends, drain the reservoir and supply line so nothing freezes, disconnect the water line, and cover the unit for winter.
2. Bathroom exhaust fans
Pull the grille off your bathroom fan a couple of times a year and you’ll likely find a felted layer of dust and lint against the motor housing. That buildup insulates the motor and forces it to work harder to move the same amount of air, which is the overheating mechanism American Family Insurance’s home safety guidance points to as a genuine fire risk, not just a performance problem. Vacuum or wipe down the grille and housing, and clean around the motor with a soft brush or compressed air instead of water. Run the fan and, after a few minutes, check whether the housing feels hotter than it should, and listen for scraping or grinding, which usually means a bearing is failing. Finally, trace the duct running from the fan to its exterior vent cap. A duct that’s crushed, disconnected, or clogged with lint forces the fan to push air against resistance it wasn’t built for, raising the load on the motor the same way a blocked dryer vent does.
3. Ceiling fans
Wipe down the top of your ceiling fan’s motor housing and blade mounts on a regular basis. Dust there acts like insulation and traps heat the motor is designed to shed into open air. While you’re up there, run the fan on each speed and listen for grinding or humming that wasn’t there before, since that usually points to worn bearings creating friction inside the motor. Also check what’s controlling your fan. A standard light dimmer switch isn’t built for a fan motor’s electrical load, and using one can overheat or damage the motor over time, which is why home inspectors flag dimmer-controlled ceiling fans as a repair item. If your fan is wired to a plain dimmer instead of a fan-rated speed control, correct that before running it for hours at a stretch.
4. Clothes dryers
Dryers didn’t need a new explanation from Grand Junction’s fire department: lint is a documented fire cause the Consumer Product Safety Commission has investigated for years, and its data points to the exhaust duct itself, not just the lint trap, as the most common origin point for dryer fires. Clean the lint screen before every load, and at least once a year, disconnect the exhaust duct and clear it out completely. Clothes taking longer than usual to dry is a reliable sign the vent is already restricted.
Smoke alarms still catch what maintenance misses
Grand Junction’s warning is a reminder that fire risk in a home doesn’t only come from candles left burning or something forgotten on the stove. Everyday appliances running quietly in the background account for a real share of house fires, and the fix for most of them is unglamorous: clean them, listen for noises that mean a part is wearing out, and replace what’s failing before it fails outright. Pair that habit with working smoke alarms on every level of your home, tested on a regular schedule, so that if maintenance ever does fall through the cracks, you still have the earliest possible warning something is wrong.
