Selena Gomez has closed the sale on her longtime Encino estate for $5.4 million, a full $1 million under her original asking price, according to Hoodline. The deal closed September 8, and the buyer is getting a house with a strange kind of built-in celebrity history: an actual television set disguised as a kitchen.
A Mansion With Rock and Roll Roots
The 11,500-square-foot property was once owned by rock legend Tom Petty before Gomez bought it herself in March 2020 for roughly $4.9 million, according to Work + Money. The six-bedroom, ten-bathroom estate originally hit the market for $6.495 million, and the eventual sale price reflects a meaningful cut from that ask, per Robb Report.
The Kitchen Doubled as a Television Set
The most talked-about room in the house never needed a Hollywood set designer. Gomez filmed the early seasons of her HBO Max cooking series “Selena + Chef” directly in the estate’s kitchen, according to Entertainment Now. Anyone who has watched the show has technically already toured the exact room where the new owners will make their morning coffee.
Beyond the kitchen, the estate includes a wine cellar, a home gym, a massage room and a private vocal booth — amenities that read less like a typical celebrity spec sheet and more like a working musician’s actual daily needs. Most buyers fill that kind of square footage with a home theater or a second living room instead.
Part of a Bigger Move
The Encino sale comes less than a year after Gomez and her husband, music producer Benny Blanco, closed on a $35 million estate in Beverly Hills, per Entertainment Now. Once the couple settled into the new property, offloading the Encino house was less a question of if than of how much of a discount it would take to get the deal done.
For whoever bought it, the price cut means walking into a house with an unusually specific piece of pop culture attached — not just a former owner’s name, but an actual filming credit built into the architecture. Whether that history adds resale value down the line or simply makes for a good story at dinner parties, Gomez’s old Encino kitchen now belongs to someone else to cook in.
The sale also fits a pattern that has become familiar among A-list sellers in the San Fernando Valley over the past year: buy quietly, live in the property long enough to make it genuinely their own, then sell once a bigger move elsewhere becomes final rather than listing speculatively. Gomez owned the Encino estate for roughly five and a half years before letting it go, long enough for the “Selena + Chef” connection to become a permanent part of the property’s identity rather than a footnote. For a house that already carried Tom Petty’s name before hers, that is now two layers of celebrity history a future owner will be selling right along with the square footage.
