Airbnb Hosts Are Filing Damage Claims Through the Platform’s Own Protection Program at a Record Pace, and Hosts Say Actually Getting Paid Is Now Taking Months Longer Than It Ever Used To

Airbnb’s own host protection program, AirCover, was built to reassure property owners that damage from a careless guest would not come entirely out of their own pocket. Hosts are now filing claims through that program at a record pace — and increasingly reporting that actually getting paid takes considerably longer than it used to.

What AirCover Is Supposed to Do

AirCover for Hosts, Airbnb’s built-in protection program, covers hosts for guest-caused property damage and provides liability protection, positioned by the company as included automatically with every booking rather than an optional add-on hosts have to purchase separately. The program was designed specifically to remove one of the biggest psychological barriers to hosting: the fear that a single bad guest could cause thousands of dollars in damage with no real recourse.

Why Claims Volume Keeps Climbing

As the total pool of active listings and bookings has grown, the raw number of damage claims filed has grown alongside it, which is a mathematically unsurprising trend on its own. What hosts describe as more notable is the pace at which claims are being resolved relative to that growth — hosts increasingly report that the documentation and back-and-forth required to substantiate a damage claim has become more demanding, stretching resolution timelines from what used to be a matter of days into a process that can drag on for months.

Where the Friction Actually Happens

Hosts who have filed claims describe the process as requiring extensive photo documentation, itemized repair or replacement estimates, and sometimes multiple rounds of correspondence disputing an initial claim valuation that comes in lower than the host expected. For hosts operating a single property as a side income source rather than a full-time business, that back-and-forth can be a significant time cost layered on top of the original property damage itself — precisely the kind of hidden friction the program’s marketing does not emphasize.

What This Means for the Hosting Business Model

The lag between filing a claim and actually receiving payment matters more than it might seem, because most hosts need to complete repairs before the next guest checks in, regardless of whether Airbnb has finished processing the claim. That gap effectively forces many hosts to front the repair costs themselves and treat the eventual AirCover reimbursement as a delayed recovery rather than the fast safety net the program is marketed as. For an industry increasingly reliant on individual hosts rather than large management companies, a slower claims process is a quiet but real tax on exactly the hosts least equipped to absorb it.
