Apple’s Long Promised Smart Home Hub Is Reportedly Finally Arriving This Fall After Years of Delays and Scrapped Prototypes

Apple’s smart home hub has been “coming soon” for so long it has practically become a running joke among people who track the company’s hardware roadmap, but the reporting now converging around a fall 2026 launch window is more specific than anything that’s come before it. According to MacRumors, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device remains on track to ship before the end of 2026, and Apple has reportedly begun rearranging sections of its retail stores to make room for it. This is still a rumor, not a confirmed release, but it’s the most consistent one Apple’s smart home ambitions have gotten in years.

A years-long saga of delays

If you feel like you’ve been reading about this device forever, that’s because you basically have. Apple originally hoped to unveil the hub in spring 2025, according to MacRumors’ tracking of the project, before pushing it to spring 2026 and then again to September as the Siri overhaul the device depends on kept slipping. The common thread through every delay has been Siri itself: Apple wants this hub to run on a genuinely conversational, AI-driven assistant rather than the more limited version currently on iPhones, and getting that software ready has repeatedly outpaced the hardware team’s timeline.

Along the way, the hardware itself went through its own churn. Reports in January 2026 from The Information’s Wayne Ma described an early concept with a robotic, swiveling base that could physically turn to face whoever was speaking to it, an idea that was apparently scrapped in favor of something simpler. Other leaks described a dome-shaped base styled after the old iMac G4, and a magnetic snap-to-wall mounting system with built-in doorbell integration that surfaced in March 2026 leaks. None of those specific concepts appear to have made it to the final design, at least based on current reporting, which now centers on a more conventional tabletop-and-wall-mount pairing.

What the device is reportedly shaping up to be

As currently described, the hub pairs a HomePod-style speaker with a seven-inch square display and a front-facing camera, running an entirely new operating system reportedly built on the Apple TV’s tvOS foundation rather than iOS. Internally code-named “Charismatic,” the software is said to blend elements of watchOS and iPhone StandBy mode into a widget-heavy interface, with pre-installed access to Safari, Apple Music, Photos, Home, Notes, Calendar, and Apple News, but reportedly no dedicated app store of its own.

The facial recognition piece is where it gets genuinely interesting for a shared household. Code uncovered in a recent macOS beta pointed to support for multiple user profiles tied to what Apple is internally calling “ambient sensing,” meaning the hub could reportedly recognize who’s standing in front of it and adjust the display, calendar, and content accordingly, whether that’s a parent checking the family schedule or a kid asking for a timer. Proximity sensors are said to resize on-screen elements as someone approaches or steps away, and a built-in intercom function would let separate units placed around a house talk to each other, useful for the exact kind of room-to-room “dinner’s ready” calling that smart displays have always promised and rarely delivered well.

Price, hardware, and why any of this matters for your kitchen counter

MacRumors’ guide puts the expected price around $350, which would place it above rival smart displays like Amazon’s Echo Show line, and reporting points to an A18 chip with at least 8GB of RAM under the hood, more processing power than most kitchen gadgets typically carry. Apple is expected to sell both a tabletop version with a speaker base and a wall-mounted version, and the assumption baked into most of the reporting is that Apple wants households to buy more than one, mirroring how people already scatter HomePod minis or Echo devices from room to room.

Whether any of this survives contact with an actual product announcement remains genuinely uncertain. Apple has walked back smart home ambitions before, and Siri’s readiness has been the bottleneck on this exact project more than once already. But the consistency of the reporting since midsummer, multiple outlets converging on the same October-to-year-end window, the same price point, and the same core feature set, suggests this is closer to shipping than any previous version of “Apple’s smart home hub is finally coming” has been. For anyone who has spent years cobbling together third-party smart displays to manage their HomeKit gadgets, that’s the part worth watching.
