Two Wounded Army Veterans Received Mortgage Free Homes Side by Side in a Brand New Florida Neighborhood Built Just for Them

Army Spc. Ryan Heard survived a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s Logar Province in July 2013 that left him with a severe traumatic brain injury. Army Sgt. Carson Shaw was paralyzed from the waist down in a line-of-duty vehicle accident in October 2024. On August 27, 2026, both men walked and rolled through the front doors of brand-new houses built next door to each other in Riverview, Florida, houses they will never make a mortgage payment on. PulteGroup’s West Florida Division and the nonprofit Building Homes for Heroes handed over the keys as part of a program that has now given away more than 100 mortgage-free homes nationwide since 2013.

Two Very Different Injuries, One Neighborhood

Heard enlisted in 2007 and spent more than six years with a Cavalry unit, deploying to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once before the blast that changed his life, according to Hoodline. He was awarded a Purple Heart and now lives with his partner, Danielle, and their two children. Shaw’s path to the same street was shorter but no less costly: he enlisted in 2019, served six years with the 1st Ranger Battalion, and deployed to Iraq, Syria and parts of Africa before the 2024 accident left him paralyzed below the waist.

Their new houses sit at 13716 Sunlight Meadow Dr. in Spencer Glen, a Riverview community PulteGroup is developing in the Tampa Bay area. Both families are expected to be moved in by Thanksgiving, according to Osprey Observer, which covered the handover. Heard and Shaw are the seventh and eighth veterans to receive mortgage-free homes from PulteGroup’s West Florida Division, and the first pair honored together at the same time.

Messages Sealed Inside the Walls

Before either house was finished, PulteGroup held what it calls a Notes of Love ceremony, inviting community members, subcontractors and volunteers to write handwritten notes directly onto the studs and framing before drywall went up. Those messages are now sealed inside the walls for the life of the homes, a detail meant to give each veteran a permanent, if invisible, reminder of who helped build the place they’ll live in. Tony Campano, PulteGroup West Florida’s vice president of procurement, has described the moment of walking a veteran through a home filled with notes from strangers as one of the most powerful parts of the entire build process.

The program behind it, Built to Honor, is PulteGroup’s partnership with Building Homes for Heroes, a nonprofit founded in 2006 by Andy Pujol. According to Hoodline, roughly 96% of the organization’s 2025 funding went directly to veteran assistance rather than overhead. Pujol has said the Notes of Love tradition captures something the program is built around: that a house isn’t just a structure, it’s the beginning of a new community for someone who has already sacrificed enormously for the one they used to serve.

What Mortgage-Free Actually Means Here

The scale of the giving is not small. PulteGroup and Building Homes for Heroes have gifted more than $40 million in home value nationally since the partnership began, and more than 200 homes across Florida alone have gone to veterans and their families through various company programs, per Hoodline’s reporting. For a severely injured veteran, a mortgage-free home removes what is often the single largest fixed cost a family carries, freeing up income for medical care, home modifications, or simply the ordinary expenses of raising kids that a monthly mortgage payment would otherwise absorb.

Heard has said the outpouring of labor and donations that went into his house left him without adequate words to describe it. Shaw has called the day one of the most meaningful of his life, thanking everyone who showed up and gave their time to make it happen. Neither man asked for a house built specifically for someone in his position, but that’s effectively what both got: homes designed and delivered by a builder that has spent more than a decade refining exactly how to do this, one veteran and one neighborhood at a time. What started as a single mortgage-free home in 2013 has become, in Riverview, two houses on the same street, built for two men whose injuries came from entirely different circumstances but whose service asked the same thing of them.
