More Households Are Ditching Full Service Movers for Portable Storage Containers to Cut Their Overall Moving Costs and Save Money This Year

More homeowners and renters are turning to portable storage containers instead of hiring a full-service moving crew, a shift driven largely by the price gap between the two approaches. As moving season winds down and household budgets tighten heading into the fall, the container model is drawing renewed attention as one of the more affordable ways to relocate.

How the Savings Add Up

The appeal of portable containers rests on a simple trade: the household does more of the physical labor, and the company does less. A container company such as PODS delivers an empty unit to a driveway, gives the customer days or weeks to pack it at their own pace, then picks it up, transports it to the new address, and drops it off again for unloading. That arrangement removes much of the labor, packing and loading in particular, that makes up a large share of what a full-service mover charges for, according to Move.org’s 2026 PODS pricing and services review.

Because customers are effectively supplying their own labor for the most time-consuming parts of a move, container pricing tends to land below what full-service movers quote for comparable moves, particularly over longer distances, according to cost data compiled by MoveBuddha’s 2026 breakdown of PODS costs by size, distance, and season. The same analysis also finds that pricing shifts with the size of the container ordered and the time of year a move takes place, with summer months typically commanding higher rates as demand for moving services peaks.

A separate guide from HireAHelper’s 2026 PODS cost analysis reaches a similar conclusion, noting that households willing to handle their own packing and loading generally see meaningfully lower total costs than they would with a traditional mover that provides a full labor crew. The consistency across three independent guides suggests the pattern is well established rather than a one-off promotional claim.

Why the Trend Is Gaining Ground Now

Rising costs across nearly every part of the moving industry, fuel and labor chief among them, have pushed more households to look for ways to trim their moving budgets without giving up the convenience of not driving a rental truck themselves. Portable containers offer a middle ground: the company still handles delivery, pickup, and transport, but the customer controls the pace of packing and can spread that work out over several days instead of squeezing it into a single, expensive moving-day window.

For families relocating locally or across the country, the container model also allows for flexible storage. A packed unit can sit at a storage facility for days or weeks before the final delivery, according to Move.org’s review, which gives movers more control over timing when a new home isn’t quite ready on closing day.

As more households compare quotes this fall, the container option is likely to keep gaining ground among budget-conscious movers who are willing to trade some of the convenience of full-service help for a lower final bill.
