Homeowner Quoted $18k by a Contractor for a Dining Nook Answers No Thanks I Got It and Builds the Bench, Cushions, Table and Hanging Plants in Five Steps

The first frame of the reel shows an empty, bright room with a bay of tall windows, a person bent over beside a few open wooden frames on the floor, and one line of on-screen text: “The contractor quoted me $18k to build this dining nook.” The caption from @angelarosehome gives the answer: “And I said “No thanks. I got it.””

The 42 second video, posted in September 2026, then runs as a labeled list. Text boxes count off five steps, each one a stage of the same corner of the room, and the reel finishes on a before and after.

Step 1 is “build a bench.” By the five second mark a long, angled bench of plain wood panels wraps the curve of the window bay, with two people working on it, one leaning over the seat and one kneeling beside it.

Step 2 is “make 10 cushions.” The bench appears topped along its whole length with tan leather colored cushions that someone presses against the windows.

Step 3 is “build a table.” Two people carry a large white oval tabletop across the room. Another shot shows a short round base made of wooden slats sitting on the floor, and a close up at the 19 second mark shows the fluted edge of that base up against the underside of the tabletop.

Step 4 is “hang plants.” A rod with leather straps goes up across the window, a folding stepladder stands under it, and potted plants in rope hangers are lifted into place one after another. By the end of the step the pots hang at different heights across the bay.

Step 5 is “final touches.” A large framed print with a deep red pattern goes up on the wall. Then the empty room returns with the word “before” and a pendant light of white globes, and the last three frames show the finished nook with a round table, chairs, hanging plants and a pendant lamp, over the words “follow along for more daring DIY.”

The video does not say what the build cost, how long it took, or what the contractor’s $18k quote covered. One viewer wrote that the reel “might’ve been more effective if you at least told us how much it cost you do DIY.” Another wrote that step 1 is really “have all the tools necessary for this project, which is easily a multi thousand dollar investment.” A third offered a fix for the finished piece: the table “needs locking wheels to get in and out of bench seating with ease.”

The five steps in the video give you the line items for comparing a quote with a DIY plan. Price each one separately: the bench, ten cushions, the table, the plant rod and hangers, the print. Then add what the video leaves out, which is every tool you do not own and the hours you will spend. If you have a contractor quote, ask for it broken down the same way so you can see which of those lines the $18k includes.

The plant step is the one with a safety rule attached. The video shows a folding stepladder in use for the hanging rod and the pots. According to the CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a stepladder should be fully open, with the spreaders locked and all four feet on a level, dry, clean floor. NIOSH also says three points of contact are needed at all times, which means both hands free for the ladder, and that items should not be carried up by hand but lifted in a bag or basket. For a nook where the plants hang over the seats, that means hauling the pots up one at a time in a bag instead of climbing with them.

Before you copy the idea, measure the bay and sketch the bench in sections, because the one in the video is built from several separate boxes that fit the curve of the windows. Decide up front where the table will live and how it will move, using the locking wheel tip from the comments, and keep the receipts for each step so your own cost comparison is real.
