Woman Skips a Vacation and Uses the House Key Her Best Friend Gave Her to Paint, Demo a Bathroom Vanity and Build a Fluted Wood Media Wall as a Birthday and Housewarming Surprise

The best housewarming gifts are the ones that make a new home feel finished before the owner even walks through the door. One woman took that idea to the extreme. When her best friend bought her first house and went on a trip, she skipped the vacation she had planned to join, borrowed her friend’s key and spent the time off turning the place upside down in the best way.

The surprise project is shared by @kacyshakeria, who narrates each step of the work as she goes.

A key, a closing day and a change of plans

She explains that her best friend had just purchased her first home and even closed on her birthday, which she calls a big gift to herself. The friend already had a trip planned, and the narrator was supposed to go along. Instead, she did not feel like doing the shopping for a vacation and decided to use her days off and her key privilege to get some work done.

The paint had been bought ahead of time, but her friend did not know everything she was planning. Because she already knew the inspiration her friend had in mind, she felt comfortable getting things started. She even jokes that a little built up anger needed somewhere to go, and demolition was a good outlet.

From drywall to demolition

The first scenes show drywall work in a bathroom. She trims drywall, screws a patch over an electrical cutout, spackles and sands the wall while wearing a mask. Then she tapes large mirrors with blue painter’s tape, pries them off with a putty knife and a hammer, and pulls on a white protective suit to take out the old vanity cabinet.

Painting follows. She paints the main living area and a guest bathroom, with a few areas still left. She also had what she calls a side quest, which required the help of an unwilling participant, her brother. He mounts and levels floating wooden drawers on a living room wall, and she is grateful that he came through.

The media wall

The centerpiece is the media wall. She did not buy a gift on her friend’s actual birthday because she knew what she was building would count as both a birthday gift and a housewarming gift in one. Her friend had sent a video of the style she wanted, so the plan was clear.

In her garage she cuts vertical fluted wood panels with a miter saw, then back at the house she applies construction adhesive and nails the slats above the floating console, working from a stepladder. Time was against her, and she admits that she did not get to everything she had hoped to finish. The priority was the media wall, and she is glad she finished it. When the television is mounted, the wall wears a big red bow, because it is a gift, after all.

Why slat walls work so well

Fluted or slatted walls add texture and warmth without requiring a full remodel. They hide uneven walls, frame a television beautifully and look expensive even when built from simple lumber. Pairing the wall with a floating console creates a clean line, keeps the floor visible and makes the room feel larger.

Tips for building a media wall

  • Find the studs and mount the television bracket and any heavy floating cabinet to them, not to drywall alone, following the weight limits on the hardware.
  • Plan your cables before closing anything up. In wall power and low voltage wiring have code requirements, so use rated products and ask a licensed electrician about outlets.
  • Test fit slats on the floor first, and use a spacer so the gaps stay even from top to bottom.
  • Use a combination of construction adhesive and a brad nailer for a secure hold, and keep the line of the first slat level.
  • Wear eye and ear protection with saws, and a dust mask when sanding or cutting, especially in a home built before 1978, where old paint may contain lead.
  • Leave vents, access panels and outlets accessible. Do not block air returns.

A note on surprising a friend

Renovations as gifts only work when the owner truly wants them. This story succeeds because the friend had shared exactly what she wanted and had trusted the helper with a key. If you are planning something similar, ask about the style, avoid anything permanent that the owner has not asked for and keep the work reversible whenever possible.

Common questions

How long does a slat wall take? It depends on the size of the wall and how much prep is needed. Cutting and finishing the slats is often the longest part, so spread the work over several days.

Is it hard to remove an old vanity? Usually it is a matter of shutting off the water, disconnecting the supply lines and drain and unscrewing the cabinet from the wall. If you are unsure about plumbing, call a licensed plumber.

Takeaways

A thoughtful gift does not have to come in a box. Time, effort and a clear idea of what a friend wants can turn a new house into a place that feels like hers on the very first day. Plan the details, respect her style and let the red bow be the final touch.
