Husband Who Spent Nine Months Living Off His Closet Floor Spends Four Months Building a Custom Walk In Closet With Fluted Drawers, Hidden LED Lighting and Marble Look Tile Then Covers His Wife’s Eyes for the Reveal

Every household has that one space that never quite works, and for one couple it was the closet. After moving into their house, the husband spent nine months pulling clothes off the floor of a crowded closet. Then he decided to stop complaining and build something extraordinary, and it took four months to finish.

Walk-in closet

The closet transformation comes from @mariahandbill, who narrates the entire build with plenty of humor and some friendly banter from his wife.

Starting with a pile of clothes

The story opens in a closet packed with clothes piled high. He explains that he has been living off the closet floor since they moved into the house nine months earlier, and that today, things will change. Painter’s tape comes next, mapped out along the walls to show where the future shelves and drawers will go. He removes the baseboards, and jokes that because it is his closet he does not need his wife’s approval. She walks in holding a tiny microphone and politely reminds him that a husband always needs his wife’s approval.

Building from the ground up

As in his earlier projects, the first job is a base. He cuts lumber with a miter saw in the garage, assembles base frames with a nail gun and fits them to the closet floor. A quick safety reminder pops up before he moves on to plywood, which he cuts outdoors on the lawn before assembling the shelf boxes inside. The mood stays light, with a skateboard ride across a sheet of plywood providing a comedy break.

Lighting is next. He explains that every project he builds has to have excellent lighting, and this time he might be going overboard. LED strips are tested in grooves built into the cabinets, and once the lights are in, he checks that they work.

Drawers, face frames and a first for him

He builds face frames, drilling pocket holes on the bathroom floor, with a whispered request not to tell his wife. Drawer boxes come together in the garage, and after the first one fits, he reminds himself that nine more are needed. For his first time building drawers, he thinks he did a pretty good job. Fluted drawer fronts finish the look.

The painting phase begins with a protective suit and respirator, and he sprays the entire unit white. Then he turns to tile, setting large marble pattern porcelain tiles on the back wall and side mirrors with tile adhesive, leveling clips and a rubber mallet.

The reveal

When the closet is ready, he covers his wife’s eyes and counts down from three. She opens them to a lit, organized closet with every piece of clothing in its place and tells him it is better than hers. He calls it by far the best project he has ever built, and says it took about four months. The scene ends with the couple hugging in the new space.

What a closet build teaches about planning

A closet is one of the most practical places to invest in custom storage. Because the floor area is small, vertical space, drawers and good lighting make a huge difference. The tape layout he used at the start is a smart way to test proportions before cutting any wood. Building a base first keeps cabinets level even when floors are not, and finishing the face frames after the boxes are installed hides edges and creates a built in look.

Tips for building your own closet system

  • Measure twice, then tape out the design on the walls and floor so you can walk through it before you build.
  • Check the floor and walls for level. A plywood base can be shimmed so cabinets sit flat and doors and drawers line up.
  • Use plywood boxes with face frames and pocket screws for strength, and test fit every drawer before attaching fronts.
  • Spray paint outdoors or with strong ventilation and wear an organic vapor respirator, safety glasses and gloves.
  • LED strips run on low voltage and need a suitable power supply. If the lighting needs new wiring or an outlet, hire a licensed electrician.
  • Closets in older homes may have outlets or access panels in surprising places, so plan around them and keep them reachable.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to build a closet than buy one? That depends on materials, tools you already own and your skill level, so price your plan before you start. A custom build can fit your space exactly, which a ready made system often cannot.

How long should a project like this take? Plan for longer than you think. Even an experienced builder in this story needed about four months, working around a regular schedule.

Should a beginner try drawers? Yes, but build one first and make sure it slides smoothly before repeating the process.

Takeaways

This project works because of a clear plan, patience and a willingness to learn new skills along the way. The reward is a space that makes every morning easier, and a husband who finally gets his clothes off the floor.
