7 Things You Should Never Store in Cardboard Boxes

We all have those moments—standing in front of a mountain of cardboard boxes, wondering if we’ve just created a cozy home for all our stuff or an accidental disaster waiting to happen. Cardboard is a go-to for storage because it’s lightweight, easy to stack, and, let’s face it, pretty affordable. But before you start tossing everything into those boxes, there are some items that just don’t belong in cardboard. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

1. Food and Perishables

Let’s start with the obvious: don’t store food in cardboard boxes. I mean, unless you’re looking to attract every bug in a five-mile radius. Cardboard is porous and can absorb moisture, which is a big no-no for anything that’s even remotely edible. Even canned goods can rust if exposed to dampness or humidity, so keep those in a cool, dry place—preferably not in a box that doubles as a bug buffet.

2. Important Documents

So, you’ve got that pile of important documents from your last move—warranties, tax forms, and all those papers that make you feel like a responsible adult. Storing them in cardboard boxes? Not the best idea. Cardboard can get damp, tear, and, let’s be real, get misplaced in that chaotic storage area. Instead, invest in a sturdy file box or a fireproof safe. Your future self will thank you when you’re searching for that warranty on your blender three years down the line.

3. Electronics

Electronics and cardboard boxes? That’s a recipe for disaster. Dust, moisture, and temperature changes can wreak havoc on your beloved gadgets. Plus, if you’re not careful, you could end up with a box of tangled cords and broken dreams. Instead, wrap your electronics in bubble wrap and store them in a hard case or a plastic bin. Think of it as giving them a spa day—because they deserve it!

4. Clothing (Especially Seasonal Items)

Ah, the classic “I’ll just throw my winter clothes in a cardboard box until next year” strategy. Spoiler alert: it rarely works out well. Cardboard isn’t airtight, so your favorite sweater can become a cozy home for mold or, even worse, moths. Those little critters love a good wool buffet, and you definitely don’t want to be the main course. Opt for vacuum-sealed bags or clear plastic bins instead. At least you’ll be able to see what’s lurking in there!

5. Artwork and Photographs

Got a collection of precious family photos or artwork you cherish? Don’t even think about tossing them into a cardboard box. They need a little TLC, not a cardboard prison. Cardboard can cause fading, bending, and other damage over time. Consider storing your photos in archival-quality sleeves or boxes designed specifically for preserving memories. After all, you want those memories to last longer than your last diet, right?

6. Medications

Here’s a life lesson: don’t store your medications in cardboard boxes. They can be affected by temperature and moisture changes, which can reduce their effectiveness. Plus, if you’re like me, you’ll forget which box has what and end up playing a high-stakes game of “Guess That Pill.” Instead, keep your meds organized in a labeled, airtight container. That way, you’ll always know where to find them—no more guessing games!

7. Anything with Sentimental Value

Last but definitely not least, think long and hard before you toss anything with sentimental value into a cardboard box. Whether it’s your grandmother’s quilt or that trophy you won in the third grade, cardboard just isn’t made for keeping memories safe. It can crumble, tear, and get damp, ruining those precious items. Instead, consider investing in a proper storage solution that will keep your cherished items protected. It’s like giving a warm hug to your memories!

So, there you have it: seven things you should avoid storing in cardboard boxes. It might be tempting to use those handy boxes for everything, but a little extra care can save you a lot of heartache down the road. Your belongings deserve better than cardboard, and you’ll thank yourself later when you’re not digging through a pile of soggy boxes looking for your grandma’s quilt or that photo of you in your awkward teenage phase. Happy organizing!
