Adult Daughter at 15 Begged Her uBPD Mom for Eating-Disorder Treatment and Got Laughed At — Once She Was Forced In Years Later, Her Mom Posted ED Awareness Online

The intricate dynamics of family relationships often tell a poignant story, especially when mental health issues are at play. A recent post on Reddit shared the struggles of a woman dealing with her husband’s family dynamics, which have been complicated by her mother-in-law’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. For many, caregiving emerges as a challenging endeavor that can strain familial bonds, but it also reveals the deeper issues within the family structure.

The Reddit user, a 48-year-old woman, has been married to her husband since she was just 16. Over the years, she has dealt with typical marital struggles. However, a significant source of tension has been her relationship with her mother-in-law (MIL), who has historically been unwelcoming. This disconnect became especially pronounced after her MIL began showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease—a situation that her husband and his siblings appeared to navigate without her input.

After alerting her husband to the signs of cognitive decline in his mother, the reality hit hard. In June 2024, her MIL experienced a severe health crisis that required full-time care, and the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s confirmed what had long been suspected. Despite this validation of her earlier concerns, she was left on the periphery as her husband and his siblings convened to discuss care decisions, excluding her from critical conversations about the family’s future.

Once the decision was made for the couple to take on their MIL’s care, the burden fell squarely on the user’s shoulders. Juggling the responsibilities of a caregiver for someone suffering from both Alzheimer’s and diabetes, she found herself in a relentless cycle of care—round-the-clock responsibilities that took a toll on her mental and physical health. Despite receiving minimal funding to support her role, she quickly realized the challenges of managing the care of someone who did not have warm feelings towards her.

Her husband’s attempts to help felt insufficient. While he endeavored to contribute, the user bore the brunt of the caregiving duties, managing everything from medication to meals. Meanwhile, his siblings were largely absent, contributing little more than occasional visits to check on their mother. The brother-in-law spent a scant 15-20 minutes on weekends, while the sister-in-law, who was the power of attorney, made infrequent visits to collect mail. Neither sibling offered support or even inquired about the woman’s well-being. This lack of engagement left her feeling more like hired help than a family member, intensifying her sense of isolation.

With no room for downtime, the woman openly communicated her frustrations to her husband, expressing how the situation was affecting her mental health. Her attempts to advocate for herself, however, seemed to fall on deaf ears, further complicating their marriage. She felt that he had not taken a stand for her needs nor addressed the roles his siblings were playing—or rather, not playing—in this family crisis.

As the caregiver’s mental health eroded, the emotional burden and resentment grew. It forced her to confront not just her role within the family but the dysfunction that existed before caregiving became necessary. The woman’s feelings towards her MIL were complicated, imbued with the tension of past grievances and the current demands of the caregiving role.

This situation evokes a broader narrative about caregiver burnout, the complexities of family dynamics, and the often-overlooked emotional toll of supporting aging relatives. For many, caregiving is not merely a labor of love, but rather a comprehensive commitment that can impact one’s identity, relationships, and overall well-being.

In navigating these challenges, the user’s experience resonates with anyone who has faced the difficulties of balancing familial obligations against personal health and relationship needs. The need for mutual support and understanding within families is paramount, yet often overlooked until it culminates in substantial emotional strain.

The intricacies of familial relationships can be fraught with tension and misunderstanding, especially when mental health issues arise. The situation narrated offers a glimpse into the struggles many face in their familial obligations, and the pressing need for communication and empathy within families. As caregivers often feel an overwhelming burden, prioritizing self-care and advocacy for one’s needs can be crucial in maintaining balance amid chaos.
