Airbnb Host Is Facing Blackmail Accusations After a Guest Says He Threatened to Tell Her Partner About an Affair Unless She Paid Him to Stay Quiet After Checkout

An Airbnb “superhost” is facing extortion and privacy-invasion claims in a lawsuit accusing her of threatening to send a guest’s spouse compromising doorbell-camera footage unless he paid a disputed fee. The suit, filed by guest Shawn Mackey against host Pamela Fohler and Airbnb itself, stems from a two-night stay in the fall of 2022 that unraveled into a legal fight over a negative review, according to Fox News and Men’s Journal.

What the Lawsuit Alleges

According to the complaint, Mackey booked Fohler’s property, listed as “A Little Bit More Country,” for roughly $567 a night. A dispute broke out over extra guests and noise complaints from neighbors, and Fohler asked the group to leave. Mackey says he negotiated to stay out the reservation, then afterward left a negative review and requested a partial refund of $502.46.

What happened next is the center of the case. Court filings cited by Yahoo Finance allege Fohler texted Mackey a doorbell-camera still of him with another woman at 3:16 a.m. during his stay, writing: “Photo at 3:16 am is especially notable. Should I forward the photos and videos to Teresa, or will you?” Teresa is identified in the filing as Mackey’s wife. When he didn’t pay the disputed $960 in fees Airbnb had assessed, the image was allegedly emailed to her directly with the subject line “nice bag.”

Both Sides Are Disputing the Facts

Fohler denies the core allegation. Men’s Journal reports she has denied ever sending the image or contacting Mackey’s wife at all, and has moved to dismiss the case. Airbnb, named as a co-defendant for suspending Mackey’s account and voiding his review after the dispute, has moved to compel arbitration rather than litigate in court. None of the claims have been resolved by a judge, and Mackey’s suit is seeking compensation for what his filing describes as extreme emotional distress, public humiliation, and damage to his marriage.

Why a Guest Would End Up Suing an Airbnb Host

Cases like this land at an uncomfortable intersection of short-term rental policy and personal privacy. Hosts routinely install doorbell and exterior security cameras — Airbnb’s own policy permits them if disclosed in the listing — and that footage typically stays with the property. What turns a security camera into a liability, according to Mackey’s complaint, is using footage of a guest for anything beyond monitoring the property itself, especially as leverage in a billing dispute.

The case is still working through pretrial motions, with Airbnb and Fohler each trying different routes out of court — one to arbitration, one to dismissal. Whatever a judge eventually decides about what actually happened between checkout and that late-night text, the dispute is already a reminder that a rental’s cameras can end up pointed at more than just the front door.
