Condo Owner Says The Smoking “Property Manager” Uses HOA Funds For His Chiropractor And Dog Walker While Half-Fixing Everything Himself

Living in a condominium should be a simple, hassle-free experience, but for one Massachusetts condo owner, their four-unit association has become a source of frustration. The unit in question, stacked above and below by other residents, has turned into what many would label “Condo Hell,” thanks in large part to the questionable actions of the self-appointed property manager residing below.

This Massachusetts condo association, established in an old house, promised tranquility and a sense of community. Unfortunately, what these residents got was a chaotic situation involving a property manager who seems to have taken liberties with their shared resources. With a set of bylaws that haven’t been updated since 1986, the rules of the condo are now merely suggestions, and enforcement could hardly be further from the minds of the residents.

The self-proclaimed property manager has been running the show for far too long, often undertaking maintenance tasks that raise more eyebrows than applause. Residents have reported that any handyman work done is typically half-hearted at best. Last summer’s disaster involved a hasty driveway repair, which consisted solely of the manager slathering buckets of tar across the pavement without notifying anyone, only to end up with crooked parking lines resembling a toddler’s art project. Now, he seeks to use HOA funds again, this time hoping to hire professionals to clean up the mess he created, all without consulting the other unit owners.

To make matters worse, there are darker clouds gathered over this management situation. The property manager has been accused of using HOA funds for personal expenses, including payments to his chiropractor and his dog walker. This unsolicited use of community money raises significant questions about the management’s accountability and transparency, with residents feeling the pinch of what can be described as embezzlement. Even more concerning is how little appears to be done about it, given the reluctance of the other residents to confront him directly, fearing his explosive temper.

The frustrations don’t end there. Residents have had to endure the effects of the property manager’s chain smoking, which wafts into the upper units and creates an uninviting atmosphere. The smell of cigarettes and marijuana penetrates their living spaces, and complaints about the situation have fallen on deaf ears. To add insult to injury, the manager’s morning routine includes hacking and coughing loudly at the crack of dawn—an unwelcome alarm clock for anyone trying to enjoy some quiet time.

Living with a neighbor who has such a disregard for both community resources and shared living conditions can be a lot for anyone to handle. The situation raises questions about how condo boards can be structured to prevent such abuses of power and protect homeowners from their neighbors. With the existing bylaws proving ineffective and costly to update, residents are left feeling trapped in a cycle of poor maintenance and questionable management.

For many, the dream of condo living turned into a nightmare, with one resident lamenting their decision to move in. They had assumed that the HOA situation was in good hands, only to find themselves grappling with a “manager” who prioritizes personal gain over community wellbeing. With no immediate solution in sight, the residents are left to wrestle with their discomfort and consider their options moving forward.

Despite the disappointing circumstances, many residents are banding together, hoping that a unified approach will help address their grievances. The theme running through the condominium community is one of frustration, disappointment, and a longing for resolution. Perhaps this collective effort can lead to changes that restore a sense of order and peace in their condo living experience.

This Massachusetts condo association serves as a cautionary tale for potential homeowners who may overlook the importance of understanding the dynamics within a community. While the idea of condo living can be appealing, it is essential to ensure that the management and governance structures are solid, transparent, and effective. After all, living in close quarters with neighbors requires a level of cooperation and respect that seems sorely lacking in this scenario.
