Family Spent Five Years Saving to Buy the Rundown House They’d Been Promised, Then the Heirs Raised the Price Without Warning and Forced a Mother of Five Into a Revenge Plot for the Ages

In a world where housing prices can quickly spiral out of control and promises can vanish overnight, one family’s determination to secure a home turned into a tale of revenge and resourcefulness. After five long years of saving to buy a rundown house in an expensive city, a mother of five found herself at the center of a dramatic twist when the heirs of the property raised the price without warning, forcing her into an ingenious plot to get the home that she believed was hers.

This story, which unfolds against the backdrop of escalating real estate costs and the struggles of a lower-middle-class family, begins with a promise made by a kind-hearted homeowner. For five years, the mother’s best friend and her husband rented an old four-bedroom house for $400 per week, a truly great price for the time. Despite the house’s many issues—an unsightly kitchen and persistent foul smells from the drainage system—the family made it their home. The elderly landlady, impressed by their commitment and care for the property, assured them that once they had saved enough for a loan, they could buy the house they had grown to love.

Tragically, just days after the family signaled they were ready to purchase, the landlady passed away. The inheritance of the house fell to her four wealthy children, who viewed their mother’s kindness as a lucrative opportunity. Initially, they reassured the family that the sale would proceed as planned, albeit after the lengthy probate process. The family, inclined to trust the new owners, began making improvements to the house, dreaming of their future as its rightful owners.

But as the probate settled, the new owners threw a wrench into the works by raising the asking price by a staggering $80,000. They decided to place the house on the open market, and the family was given just seven days to come up with the funds, which was a daunting task amid rising property prices and rents. The family’s situation became dire; facing the prospect of eviction and an uncertain future, they knew they had to act fast.

Determined not to let greed prevail, the mother of five enlisted the help of her friends, including a trusty sidekick who initiated a plan that would disrupt the open house and discourage potential buyers. The group devised a scheme to make the property appear unappealing, all while ensuring that the family did not appear to be bad tenants.

The first step was to declutter and rearrange furniture to create a cramped environment. With extra furniture added and motorcycle memorabilia hung on the walls, the house felt faintly claustrophobic. Next came the olfactory assault: a head of cabbage boiled on the stove and ammonia sprayed around the front and back doors left an unforgettable impression. They even poured a dozen rotten eggs down the drains to evoke a foul sewer-like aroma. The smell was so overwhelming it could deter any prospective buyer.

Taking the guerilla tactics a step further, friends were called upon to help enhance the scheme. A moldy old couch was placed at the neighbor’s front yard (with permission, of course) to add to the ambiance, while cars with loud engines made laps around the block during the open house to create a chaotic atmosphere. Rugby mates, all formidable in size, arrived at the neighboring house for a barbecue, donning their roughest gear and providing free food and cheap beer, effectively turning the area into a raucous party.

As the day of the open house dawned, the atmosphere was set. While some potential buyers peeked in and left within minutes, one inquisitive buyer lingered. In a conversation overheard, it was revealed that the property had frequent drainage issues and was often a hub for rowdy gatherings due to the nearby party. Armed with this information, the buyer left without making an offer.

In the end, the only offer received was from the family who had tirelessly worked to save their home. Although they had to pay more than initially planned, they managed to outbid another party by a narrow margin. The families’ quick-thinking tactics successfully thwarted the greedy heirs’ plans, ensuring that the old lady’s promise didn’t die with her. As they signed the papers and paid the deposit that day, the mother of five felt a sense of empowerment, knowing they had outsmarted those who sought to take advantage of their situation.

Now, as they settle into their home, it’s hard not to imagine the faces of those wealthy heirs when they discovered that their schemes had backfired spectacularly. Instead of profiting from their mother’s kindness, they learned that greed can sometimes lead to unexpected outcomes.
