Homeowner Says A Hoarder Sells Junk On One Side While A Woodshop And Leaf Blower Run All Year On The Other

In the realm of homeownership, many aspire to create a peaceful sanctuary, a space that resonates with their values and lifestyle. However, for one homeowner facing a unique dilemma, the experience has turned from dream to nightmare, as he navigates living between two challenging neighbors on either side of his property.

The homeowner, who has lived in his residence for three years, finds himself sandwiched between a neighbor who operates a makeshift business selling junk and another who constantly engages in noisy activities that disrupt the peace. On one side, a neighboring woman, deemed a hoarder, has created a situation that some might consider a blight on the community. She maintains a chaotic environment right outside her home, amassing items that attract curious customers. The homeowner describes this neighbor as an “angry, bitter person” who has secured a position on the homeowners’ association (HOA) board, allowing her to manipulate the community’s rules to her advantage.

The situation has escalated to the point where the homeowner feels that living next to this neighbor has become a health hazard. “I know now why the previous owners sold,” he remarked, reflecting on the stark reality of his situation. Despite being a part of an HOA, he has found that little can be done to address the ongoing disturbances. The woman rewrote the community’s covenants and restrictions (CCRs) to accommodate her lifestyle, and the lack of awareness among other residents regarding these changes ultimately led to their approval.

On the other side, the homeowner is confronted with the constant whirring noise of gas-powered machinery. His neighbor frequently operates a lawnmower, runs a leaf blower throughout the year, and works in a woodshop situated perilously close to the property line. “My deck is 20 feet from the sound of sawing wood,” he shared, encapsulating the frustration that many homeowners might empathize with. Recently, this neighbor unloaded a truck full of wood to begin rebuilding his front porch, further adding to the incessant racket.

The stress of living in this environment has prompted the homeowner to consider a significant lifestyle change. He is contemplating a move to a rental property situated on 10 acres in the countryside, where he hopes to find solace away from the nuisances that have plagued his current residence. The idea of renting out his home and possibly selling it at a loss weighs heavily on him, indicating the profound impact of his experiences with these nearby neighbors.

The challenges faced by this homeowner raise pertinent questions about the risks associated with homeownership in communities where individual freedoms can infringe upon the peace and enjoyment of others. He notes that the ability of homeowners to act largely without constraints, save for extreme circumstances, is a daunting aspect of living in such environments. The unpredictability of neighboring behaviors is a stark reminder that even in the most ideal neighborhoods, dissatisfaction can arise unexpectedly.

The woman on one side of his property has taken to unloading outdoor furniture and various items almost daily, contributing to the unsightly accumulation. The homeowner suspects that she may be collecting these items from ads requesting people to “come and take it away,” or perhaps even soliciting payment to haul away unwanted junk. “Once or twice a week, someone pulls up to negotiate,” he observed, noting the peculiar transactions taking place on what should be a residential street. He has witnessed direct exchanges of cash and has seen potential buyers browsing through the chaotic assortment when the owner is not present.

The neighbor’s age, currently 68, raises further concerns about the sustainability of her hoarding activities. The homeowner wonders how much longer she will be able to carry on this lifestyle and foresees a future where her property becomes an insurmountable mound of refuse. As he reflects on his options, it becomes evident that he is determined to reclaim the peace and tranquility that homeownership should embody.

While homeowner disputes and neighborly nuisances are not uncommon, this homeowner’s predicament serves as an extreme example of how the dynamics of neighboring properties can profoundly affect one’s living experience. With the hope of moving to a more serene setting, the homeowner is prepared to wage a war of endurance against the ongoing disturbances, all while pondering the unpredictable nature of homeownership in America.
