Mentally Ill Mother Sprays Raid Into Her Daughter’s Eyes, Threatens Murder and Suicide, and Harasses Attorneys With Slurs, Then Uses a Blocked Number for Another Suicide Threat—Forcing Her Estranged Child to Send Police While Still Maintaining No Contact

A chilling tale of mental illness and familial strife highlights the complex emotions involved in estranged relationships. A daughter has maintained no contact with her mother for over a year, yet the turmoil brought on by her mother’s severe mental illness continues to haunt her. The mother’s latest threats, including a chilling voicemail expressing suicidal ideation from a blocked number, ultimately forced her daughter to call the police for a welfare check, solidifying the tension between self-care and familial obligation.

The daughter, who has experienced repeated volatility, abuse, and incoherent behavior from her mother throughout her life, has grappled with the difficult decision to cut ties. She reflects on a childhood marred by chaos, from witnessing her father’s physical abuse to enduring her mother’s erratic relationships, which often lacked stability. After years of low contact, the daughter felt compelled to sever ties following a particularly traumatic incident when her mother sprayed Raid into her eyes, calling her “a roach like your father.”

Despite the trauma, the daughter admits to an internal struggle. “I feel like severe mental illness makes it much harder for me to know where the line is between protecting myself and wondering if I should have taken a different approach,” she writes. This emotional conflict becomes more pronounced considering her mother’s ability to appear coherent and even eccentric to outsiders, masking the deeper issues at play. “If you met her briefly, you might think she’s just eccentric or difficult,” she says. “But if you spend enough time with her, she’ll start rambling, become disconnected from reality, and say things that make almost no sense.”

As the mother’s behavior escalated, so did the daughter’s fears. After a voicemail threatening suicide, the daughter felt compelled to involve law enforcement, a decision that weighed heavily on her conscience. “I hate involving police but it felt like the only thing I could ethically do after talking through it with my partner,” she confesses. This intervention led to a community case worker engaging with her mother to assess her need for mental health resources, adding another layer of complexity to an already strained relationship.

The daughter is left to ponder the morality of her choices, questioning if she could have done more to help. “Sometimes I wonder whether no contact was the right choice, or whether I should have been trying to get her help all along,” she reflects. Even as she recognizes the cycle of abuse and enmeshment that characterized their relationship, the emotional ties remain strong. “She was a single mom, who was I to say she wasn’t competent?” she grapples, recalling how her childhood chaos obscured her understanding of the situation.

Reactions to her story reveal a spectrum of empathy and understanding. Many readers expressed their support for her decision to maintain no contact, emphasizing the importance of self-preservation in the face of abuse. Some highlighted the complexity of mental illness, arguing that while the mother’s condition undoubtedly complicates the relationship, it does not absolve her of responsibility for her actions. Others resonated with the shared experience of navigating similar family dynamics, recounting their own struggles with mentally ill relatives.

Ultimately, the daughter is left with lingering uncertainty about her choices. The need to protect oneself from emotional and physical harm is clear, yet the weight of her mother’s suffering cannot be dismissed entirely. As she continues to sift through the scars of her past, the question remains: how much responsibility does one hold for a parent in crisis, especially when that crisis has caused so much pain?
