Psychiatrist Mother-in-Law Calls a Traumatized Postpartum Mother Irrational, Takes Her Baby on Hours-Long Walks despite Her Anxiety, Then Enters the Bedroom at 5 A.M. to Stand Over the Crib—Before Announcing She Wants Another Extended Visit

The relationship between a mother and her mother-in-law can be a delicate dance, especially in the postpartum period. In one particularly fraught scenario, a new mother found herself navigating not just the complexities of early motherhood but also a relationship with a well-meaning, yet intrusive mother-in-law. After a traumatic birth experience, the mother felt a fierce protectiveness over her newborn, a sentiment that quickly clashed with her mother-in-law’s approach to “helping.”

Before giving birth, the relationship between the poster and her mother-in-law (MIL) was a polite but distant one—marked by small annoyances like unsolicited gifts and vague refusals of invitations. However, everything changed when the MIL came to visit a mere four weeks after the poster’s daughter was born. What began as a gesture of support, with the MIL cleaning and cooking, soon turned into a source of tension as boundaries began to blur.

The poster found herself overwhelmed and anxious after a traumatic C-section and weeks of sleep deprivation, leading to an intense need to protect her baby. She struggled with her MIL’s constant unsolicited advice and comparisons to her own parenting experience, as the MIL often claimed that her own child-rearing years were far more challenging. This unsolicited guidance became particularly troubling when the MIL began taking the baby from the poster without permission. “Do you need help?” the MIL would ask, acting before the poster could respond. This behavior drove a wedge deeper into their relationship.

Things came to a head when, after a moment of leaving her baby in the pram to briefly attend to something, the MIL rushed over to take the child, waking her up in the process. An irate poster told her, “I didn’t ask for your help,” which left the MIL stunned and retreating to her room in silence. In a later attempt to mend things, the poster apologized and expressed her need for personal space. To her dismay, the MIL brushed her feelings aside, claiming that she was being overly sensitive and failing to consider how unwelcome she felt.

Despite the tension, they agreed to work more closely on their communication. The MIL made some effort to step back, but continued to ask to take the baby for walks—requests that the poster reluctantly acquiesced to, despite the anxiety they caused her. Yet, the final straw came one early morning when the poster found her MIL standing over her baby’s crib at 5 a.m. after having heard the infant cry. The poster had left her baby settled with a dummy, but in a moment of sheer exhaustion, she was left speechless. The MIL simply remarked, “The baby was crying,” before walking away—a gesture that only heightened the poster’s feelings of invasion and distrust.

Upon her MIL’s departure, the poster thought she would have some breathing room. However, her partner soon informed her that the MIL wanted to visit again soon. With a fussy infant who now demanded contact naps and made outings a challenging ordeal, the poster felt utterly unprepared for another visit. She grappled with the reality of refusing the visit, fearing that doing so would escalate tensions irreparably. “If she wasn’t my partner’s mother, I would have already cut her off,” the poster lamented, illustrating the weight of familial ties, even amidst such conflict.

Comments from the online community reflected a mixture of sympathy and frustration. Many focused on the mother-in-law’s apparent lack of respect for boundaries, empathizing with the original poster’s need for space and control over her parenting. Some noted that the boundaries had to be made firmly clear in advance if another visit were to happen. Readers encouraged open communication but acknowledged the delicate balance of maintaining family ties amidst conflict.

The poster was adamant that, if a visit did occur, she would be more assertive than before, even if it meant potential conflict. Caught between the desire to preserve family harmony and protect her own mental health, she faces an unresolved dilemma: can she find a way to coexist with her MIL without compromising her own boundaries as a new mom? Only time will reveal how this complicated family dynamic will unfold.
