Renter fell completely in love with a beautiful sunlit apartment only for her boyfriend to veto the whole place over the fact that it did not come with a dishwasher

Creator @allergictokimchi posted an October 9 video showing off an empty, sunlit apartment she had clearly fallen for — the kind of bright, move-in-ready space that photographs beautifully empty and makes a renter start mentally placing furniture before the lease is even signed. The twist comes at the end: her boyfriend vetoed the entire apartment over a single missing feature, a dishwasher.

It’s a relatable, lighthearted version of a conversation most couples who have apartment-hunted together have had in some form: one partner falls for the light and the layout, while the other is already running through the daily logistics of actually living there. A missing dishwasher sounds minor in isolation, but for a couple splitting chores or juggling two work schedules, it’s the kind of detail that quietly determines whether an apartment that looks perfect on a tour actually feels livable six months in.

Kitchen amenities are, in fact, one of the more commonly cited friction points among couples renting together, according to surveys regularly run by rental platforms and consumer research firms. A dishwasher consistently ranks near the top of the list of appliances renters say they consider a near-dealbreaker rather than a nice-to-have, alongside in-unit laundry and adequate counter and storage space. That’s partly generational — younger renters who grew up with a dishwasher in the home are more likely to treat its absence as a downgrade rather than a quirk, and partly practical, since hand-washing dishes for two people every day adds up to real time that a lot of renters simply aren’t willing to budget for in an apartment they’re paying a premium for.

Older apartment buildings, particularly walk-ups and pre-war units common in dense cities, are disproportionately likely to lack a dishwasher simply because the plumbing and electrical infrastructure for one was never installed, and retrofitting it after the fact can be costly or structurally impractical for a landlord to bother with on a rental unit. That means renters hunting in older buildings face a real tradeoff: the charm, light, and character that often comes with pre-war construction frequently arrives bundled with a kitchen that’s missing conveniences a newer building would include standard. Renters who’ve been burned by this tradeoff before tend to add dishwasher presence as a non-negotiable filter on their very first apartment search, rather than discovering the gap mid-tour the way this couple did.

For couples navigating exactly this kind of disagreement, the practical fix usually isn’t abandoning a beloved apartment outright — it’s pricing out the actual cost of a workaround before writing it off completely. Portable countertop dishwashers that hook up to a standard kitchen faucet have become widely available and inexpensive enough that many renters now treat them as a reasonable substitute in older units, provided the landlord allows the appliance and there’s enough counter space to fit one. Whether or not that was the resolution here, the video captures something genuinely universal about apartment hunting as a couple: the best-looking place on a tour and the most livable place day-to-day aren’t always the same unit, and it often takes two different sets of priorities in the room to catch the difference.
