Tenant Finally Escaped a Landlord From Hell, Then Called the Building Inspector and Left Him Staring Down a Pile of Code Violations and Daily Fines

In a tale that sounds more like a subplot from a gritty TV drama than real life, a tenant recently found herself free from what can only be described as a “landlord from hell.” This story unfolds over three long years filled with harassment, neglect, and outright illegal actions on the part of the landlord. As the tenant gathered her strength to escape, she took a final, satisfying step to ensure her landlord would face the consequences of his reckless management.

The tenant, who has chosen to remain anonymous for her safety, faced numerous difficulties during her time in the apartment. According to her account, the issues began shortly after moving in. The landlord allegedly stole household items from shared spaces, demanded payments for routine plumbing repairs, and even attempted to break into her apartment. In a particularly brazen move, he attempted to charge her an additional $150 per month for a parking spot, despite her never being late on rent for the previous three years—except for one instance when she was forced to cover an unauthorized plumbing repair, leading to a minor delay.

As if these challenges weren’t enough, the apartment itself was less than desirable. The tenant discovered that the plumbing was illegal and the gas heater did not meet safety codes. The porch, which was not properly constructed, posed severe safety issues, and the ceiling paint was in a constant state of falling down. It was clear that the landlord had little regard for the well-being of his tenants or the condition of the property.

After enduring years of this unrelenting nightmare, the final straw came when the landlord attempted to raise the rent by an astonishing $500 per month. This outrageous increase left the tenant no choice but to make her escape. Just days prior to her move, she decided to take her experiences to the next level and inform the building inspector about the numerous violations she had experienced.

With four days remaining before she vacated the premises, she contacted the local building inspector and shared detailed information about the code violations plaguing her apartment. She described the unsafe porch that the landlord had replaced without proper permits, along with the illegal plumbing and the code-violating heater. To her relief, the inspector responded promptly, arriving the very next day to investigate.

The inspector’s visit was a turning point. Armed with a notepad and measuring tools, he took details of each violation. In the tenant’s words, each code infraction could lead to a $500 daily fine until they were fixed. The thought of her landlord facing not just fines but also scrutiny from city officials was a sweet form of vindication after years of suffering.

However, the landlord was not done with his antics just yet. About a week before her departure, he started to harass her, insisting she vacate the apartment by a specific time. When the tenant didn’t respond, he threatened to involve the police. Undeterred, she took the proactive approach of informing the police herself about her situation. When he did come by to threaten her again, she called the police, who confirmed that she was within her rights to remain in the apartment.

In an alarming turn of events, the landlord reportedly broke into her apartment while she was away storing her belongings. Upon her return, she found her door nailed shut, a clear act of intimidation. Once again, she called the police, who responded promptly. After explaining the ongoing harassment and illegal entry, the police informed her that her landlord was now facing felony charges for breaking and entering.

The saga of this tenant’s battle with her landlord serves as a reminder of the challenges many face in the rental market. Such stories highlight the importance of knowing one’s rights as a tenant and the potential for resolution through legal channels. While the tenant has successfully escaped her landlord’s grasp, the lingering ramifications of her experience will likely remain for a long time. Thankfully, with her newfound freedom and the potential of fines looming over her landlord, she can finally look forward to a more peaceful living situation.
