Tenant Says His Landlord Stole Most of His Deposit Over Fake Damage Claims, and Years Later He Got the Perfect Chance to Blow Up the Whole Scam in Front of the Entire Building

A tenant’s tale of woe and eventual triumph unfurled when he discovered that a long-standing dispute with his landlord was about to take a turn. Living in a high-rise building for over a decade, he had grown accustomed to his landlord’s peculiar management style. In a twist of fate, after years of feeling cheated, he found himself with the opportunity to expose his landlord’s dishonesty to the entire building.

The tenant had lived in the building for more than 10 years, enjoying a low rent and a far-from-involved landlord who lived next door. The unwritten agreement between them was clear: unless there was a major emergency, the tenant was on his own. From fixing wonky showerheads to replacing broken fridges, he managed all household repairs personally, often deducting costs from his rent. The arrangement worked for years, until the landlord’s wife decided it was time for a change.

She wanted to convert the rental unit into an office, effectively evicting the tenants. In an unusual moment of cooperation, the tenant agreed to move out a month early, expecting to receive his security deposit back along with a month’s rent. However, the landlord’s demeanor shifted dramatically. Rather than returning the deposit, he claimed the unit was damaged beyond repair and presented him with a laundry list of supposed issues. The tenant felt blindsided by the extensive list of damages, which included wear and tear that he had never anticipated would be an issue, like minor scratches and a few dents.

Despite the tenant’s best efforts to remedy the so-called damages, he ended up receiving an insulting five RMB (around £0.50) instead of the 24,000 RMB he initially expected. Anger and disappointment washed over him, yet he grudgingly accepted the derisory amount, hoping to move on. Little did he know that this experience was only the beginning of a long saga.

Gossip circulated within the high-rise, and soon the tenant shared his frustrations with a neighbor who quickly spread the word throughout the building. The landlord’s wife, once a well-respected figure among residents, found her reputation tarnished as the truth about their shady dealings began to seep through the walls of the high-rise. Meanwhile, the tenant remained vigilant, frequently bumping into the couple in the building corridors, despite initially planning to relocate to another city. It was as if fate conspired to keep the tenant and his unaccountable landlord within close quarters.

A year later, the tenant received a call from the landlord’s office regarding maintenance issues. He discovered the door frame he had fixed was still damaged, and he confronted the landlord, only to be met with indifference. Frustrated, he thought that the matter would fade into the background. However, a significant turning point came five years later.

One late night, the tenant noticed that the lights in his old apartment were still on at 3 AM. Curiosity drew him back to the building, where he found the door ajar and a shocking scene. The apartment was in complete disarray, with furniture damaged and broken cabinets scattered around. The infamous dents on the kitchen door frame persisted, a testament to the landlord’s neglect and dishonesty. Shocked and enraged, the tenant realized he had stumbled upon the perfect occasion to finally ensure that justice was served.

Taking advantage of the building’s chat group, which had gained notoriety as a community forum for over 500 residents, he shared photos and details of the dismal state of the apartment. The response was overwhelming. Other former tenants joined in, revealing their own negative experiences with the landlord, including claims of stolen deposits and general mismanagement. A portrait of chaos emerged, showcasing a landlord who had defied both communal living standards and legal obligations.

The situation escalated quickly. Residents voiced their concerns about the ongoing mismanagement of the building, leading to fines against the landlord for various infractions, including creating public disturbances and illegally renting the property as an office. The community rallied together, and management refused to grant the landlord permission to fix the property, leading to months of vacancy. Ultimately, the landlord lost not only his reputation but a significant portion of his income while the tenant reveled in the poetic justice that had unfolded.

In the end, a tenant who once felt helpless ultimately returned to reclaim his power through a digital community, transforming a personal grievance into a collective effort for accountability. The chance to confront a longstanding injustice presented itself, illustrating how a single voice can spark a movement.
