This Man Turned a Messy Backyard Shed Into a Jaw Dropping Whiskey and Cigar Lounge in a Nearly Year Long Transformation That Exploded to 30 Million Views

A year ago, @tylergraham.diy looked at a cluttered, neglected backyard shed and decided it deserved a second life. His time-lapse reel, captioned “One year ago, I turned this backyard shed into something I never imagined…”, compresses months of work into a single clip and ends on a space that looks nothing like where it started: a finished whiskey and cigar lounge, complete with proper lighting, built-in shelving, and a layout clearly designed for sitting and staying a while. The creator notes the project has now pulled in more than 30 million views.

What makes the transformation land is the contrast. The “before” shots show a dim, tool-crowded shed with exposed framing and the kind of accumulated clutter most backyard structures collect over the years. The after is a warm, finished retreat that wouldn’t look out of place attached to a house. It’s the kind of underused-space glow-up that photographs — and performs — exceptionally well, because almost every homeowner has a version of that same forgotten shed sitting in their own backyard.

Converting a backyard shed into a finished hangout space is one of the more approachable home upgrades for someone who already has the structure in place, since the shell — walls, roof, a foundation of some kind — is typically the most expensive part of any build. From there, the project becomes about insulation, electrical work, interior finishing, and furnishing, each of which can be tackled in phases rather than all at once, which is likely part of why this project stretched across a full year.

Electrical work is usually the first major decision point. A shed built for storage rarely has wiring run to it, so adding outlets, overhead lighting, and any climate control means either running a new circuit from the main panel or, in some cases, pulling a permit depending on local code. Skipping this step and relying on extension cords is a common shortcut that inspectors and electricians alike warn against, since it’s both a fire risk and a long-term inconvenience in a space meant for regular use.

Insulation and climate control come next, and they’re easy to underestimate in a structure that was never designed to be occupied for long stretches. An uninsulated shed in cigar-lounge use is going to feel the outdoor temperature almost immediately, so adding basic insulation, weatherstripping around the door, and even a small space heater or window unit makes the difference between a space people actually use and one that gets abandoned after the novelty wears off.

For a cigar-specific space, ventilation deserves extra attention beyond what a typical man-cave conversion would need. Smoke and lingering odor are the two biggest complaints people run into after finishing a project like this, and the fix is usually a dedicated exhaust fan or a small ventilation system rather than relying on opening a door or window. Factoring that into the build early, rather than retrofitting it after the fact, saves both money and frustration.

On the styling side, warm lighting, built-in or modular shelving for bottles and accessories, and comfortable seating are what turn a finished structure into an actual destination rather than just a cleaned-up shed. Secondhand furniture, repurposed wood for shelving, and LED strip lighting are common budget-friendly choices that show up again and again in these kinds of reveals, since they deliver a polished look without requiring custom carpentry or a big furniture budget.
