Space Heaters Sold At Costco For As Little As $70 Ignited 17 Times, And Owners Must Cut The Cord Off Before They Can Get A Free Replacement Heater

About 338,800 DREO space heaters are headed for the scrap pile, and the company wants owners to do something unusual before it ships a free replacement. They have to cut off the power cord.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on October 29. It covers the black ceramic DR-HSH015 model, which was sold from September 2025 through October 2026 at prices between $70 and $110.

Details and the official notice are posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

17 Heaters Caught Fire, And One Left Somebody With A Burned Hand

The commission says the heaters can overheat and ignite. In its words, they pose “fire and burn hazards.”

DREO has received 17 reports of heaters igniting. Three of those fires caused property damage.

One of the incidents burned a person’s hand.

That is a lot of trouble for a product that lots of families bought on purpose to stay safe and warm. These are the kind of heaters people park beside a recliner or under a desk and forget about.

Cut The Cord, Snap A Photo, Then Wait For The New Heater

The fix is a free replacement, but there is homework first.

Owners are told to stop using the heater right away and contact DREO. Then they unplug the unit and cut off its electrical cord. Last, they follow the company’s instructions to send in a photo of the heater with the cord cut.

The cord step is not a gimmick. It makes sure a recalled heater cannot be plugged in again by you, a relative, or the next person who finds it at a garage sale.

DREO’s recall line is 833-820-0887, open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday. You can also email [email protected] or visit dreo.com and click “Product Recalls.”

How To Tell If The Heater In Your Living Room Is One Of Them

Flip the heater over. The model number and the date it was made are printed on a label on the underside, and the recall covers model DR-HSH015 units made between April 2025 and January 2026.

The unit is a black ceramic heater about 11.5 inches wide and 13 inches tall. It comes with a remote control, and the name DREO appears on the front.

Costco sold the heaters in its stores nationwide. They were also sold online through Dreo.com, BestBuy.com, Kohls.com, Lowes.com, QVC.com, HomeDepot.com, B2BRenew.com and Costco.com.

About 36,300 more were sold in Canada. The heaters were made in Vietnam and imported by Hesung Innovation Corp, which does business as DREO, in Clifton, New Jersey.

What To Do While You Wait For The Replacement

A heater that was working fine last winter can feel like a loss the first cold night. A few safe habits will carry you through.

  • Pull the plug on the recalled heater today. Do not keep it around “just for an emergency.”
  • Warm the room another way. A good blanket, a warm sweater and closing the door to unused rooms go a long way.
  • Check the smoke alarms on every floor of your home. If the batteries are old, change them now while you are thinking about fire safety.

Do These Three Things Before You Pick Up The Scissors

First, take a clear photo of the label on the underside. It shows the model number and the manufacture date, and you will want proof of what you owned.

Second, save your order confirmation or receipt if you still have it. A screenshot of an online order works fine.

Third, think about who else may have one. Space heaters make popular gifts, and a grown child, a neighbor or an older relative might be running one in a bedroom right now. A quick phone call could be the most useful thing you do today.

Rules That Make Any Space Heater Safer

Fire safety groups consistently rank heating equipment among the leading causes of home fires, so the habits matter just as much as the brand.

Plug a space heater straight into a wall outlet. Power strips and extension cords can overheat when a heater pulls a lot of power through them.

Keep anything that can burn, such as curtains, bedding, paper and furniture, at least three feet away from the front of the heater.

Never leave a heater running while you sleep or when nobody is home. Turn it off when you leave the room.

Feel the plug and cord now and then. If either is hot to the touch, or the plastic looks discolored, stop using the heater.

Shopping For The Next One

When you pick a new heater, look for a label from a recognized safety testing lab on the box and on the unit. Choose a model with automatic shutoff if it tips over and built-in overheat protection.

It also helps to sign up for recall alerts. The Consumer Product Safety Commission posts new recalls on its website, and a quick check of the model number takes a minute.

The cold season has barely started, and the recall list is already long. If you own a DREO DR-HSH015, take ten minutes today to check the label, make the call and cut that cord. A free replacement is a small price for a quiet, safe winter.
