A $150,000 Budget Goes a Lot Further Somewhere Else
HGTV’s newest series is built around a question plenty of frustrated American homebuyers have quietly wondered themselves: what if the dream house doesn’t have to be in the same country as the job? “World’s Bargain Dream Homes” follows house hunters shopping for move-in-ready properties abroad on budgets that would barely cover a down payment back home, according to HGTV’s own show page, which describes the premise simply: “Across the world, buyers shop dreamy houses at jaw-droppingly low prices.”
Where the Series Travels
The show sends its budget-conscious buyers to Costa Rica, France, Italy, Spain, and Panama, with most searches built around a roughly $150,000 ceiling, according to Realscreen’s coverage of the series ahead of its premiere. The show comes from production company Twenty Twenty Television. Season one runs 12 episodes and premiered April 14, 2026, with new episodes also streaming on HBO Max and Discovery+ the day after they air on cable.
Turnkey, Not a Renovation Project
What separates this format from the network’s usual renovation shows is right there in the premise: these are turnkey, already-finished properties, not fixer-uppers waiting for a demo day. The drama comes from comparison instead of construction: a beachfront property in Panama or a stone farmhouse in southern Italy priced at a fraction of what a comparable home would cost in a major U.S. metro.
Riding a Real Trend, Not Just a TV Premise
The show arrives as U.S. home prices and mortgage rates have kept plenty of would-be buyers priced out of markets they grew up in, a squeeze that has made international buying communities increasingly visible online. Folding an international, bargain-hunting spinoff into HGTV’s broader lineup expansion suggests the network sees real appetite for content that treats affordability as the main character rather than a side detail.
