Man Orders a Bulk Gravel Delivery to Save Money on a Backyard Project, Then Explains Why He’s Shoveling It All by Hand After a Strange Coincidence

Sometimes the most personal home videos aren’t about a dramatic confrontation — they’re about a quiet, strange coincidence that lands harder than expected. That’s what happened to creator @erlinonthedaily, who ordered a truckload of gravel for a backyard project and ended up reconnecting with a piece of his own past.

The video starts practically: he’s trying to save money by ordering gravel delivered in bulk rather than hiring a landscaping crew to do the work for him. But while the truck is unloading, he strikes up a conversation with someone on site — and the conversation takes an unexpected turn. “It’s really crazy to be here at this house cause I actually lived in this house,” he says. The other person doesn’t quite believe him at first. “No, you’re lying.” He clarifies: it was 24 or 25 years ago. “Whoa, 24 years ago? Yes. Wow.”

He explains the connection wasn’t his own lease — it was his cousin’s. “My cousin actually was the one who was renting the house. I just stayed here for 6 months with her.” Even a short stay, decades ago, is enough to bring the memories rushing back once he’s standing in the same yard again. “Damn, crazy to be back,” he says, half laughing.

From there, the video settles back into the actual project — he notices the gravel that arrived is brown instead of the silver-gray he expected, a small mismatch he shrugs off (“I don’t really care, but I just thought it would be like that way”) — but the nostalgia keeps surfacing. Looking at a stand of trees on the property, he remembers doing yard work there himself decades earlier. “I cut up all those woods over there with a chainsaw, and I let my cousin use it for a bit, and she split her finger.” He laughs at the memory, then adds, almost to himself: “What a small world, huh?”

The video ends where it started — back on the actual task at hand, wondering out loud whether anything will even grow in the sandy soil he’s staring at. It’s a small, ordinary moment, but the detour through his own history is what makes the video stick.

Why DIY Gravel Deliveries — and Unexpected Nostalgia — Resonate

Part of why this video traveled beyond his usual audience is the practical hook: ordering a bulk load of gravel and spreading it yourself is a genuine money-saver over hiring a landscaping crew, often cutting the total cost by half or more depending on the region and the size of the job — the tradeoff being your own labor and, in this case, a few unglamorous hours with a shovel.

But the deeper reason it resonated is the coincidence at the center of it. There’s something specific about standing in a space that shaped an earlier chapter of your life — even a temporary one, even someone else’s lease — and having it come back into focus without warning. It’s the kind of moment that’s easy to dismiss as trivial in the retelling, but genuinely disorienting in the instant it happens, which is exactly what comes through in his half-laughing, half-stunned reaction on camera.

If you’re planning a similar DIY landscaping project, a few practical notes worth borrowing from his experience: confirm the gravel color and type before the truck arrives, since suppliers don’t always deliver exactly what’s pictured online, and budget more time than you expect for spreading it by hand — a single truckload can take several hours of physical labor to distribute evenly, especially over a larger area. It’s a legitimate way to save money on a home project, as long as you go in with realistic expectations about the work involved.
