Psych Hospital Worker Gives Two Weeks’ Notice After Attacks And A Broken Finger, Then Loses 60 Hours Of PTO And Gets Blacklisted

In a troubling turn of events, a Michigan employee has found herself blacklisted and denied payout for earned paid time off (PTO) after resigning from her job at a psychiatric hospital. After nearly two years of service and a series of violent encounters, including an incident that left her with a broken finger, the employee decided it was time to move on. However, her two-week notice has led to unexpected repercussions, igniting conversations about workplace rights and ethics in the healthcare sector.

The employee submitted her two-week notice after receiving a new job offer, citing numerous attacks she had endured while working at the facility. “I’m done,” she stated, expressing her frustration with the ongoing violence and lack of support from management. Prior to submitting her notice, she had requested two specific days off—July 27 and 28—for which she had not received any confirmation or denial from the scheduler until the last minute. “The scheduler never says anything until like a few days before your PTO,” she recounted.

Despite her advance notice and prior PTO requests, the situation quickly soured. Upon notifying her employer of her new job, she was told she was banned from being rehired—not just at her current hospital but at any facility owned by the same company. To add insult to injury, the employee learned that she will not receive the 60 hours of accrued PTO, a decision she felt was particularly unjust given her lengthy hours worked on the job, often exceeding 60 hours a week for over a year. “I’ve lost so much money because of this,” she lamented.

The employee’s experience sheds light on a larger issue within the healthcare industry, where workers in high-stress environments often encounter significant risks without adequate protection. Michigan’s labor laws provide minimal safeguards for employees, making it difficult for workers to claim rights that might be standard elsewhere in the country. In her case, the lack of legal recourse left her feeling abandoned by the very institution she served.

Online responses to her predicament have ranged from disbelief to sympathy, with many readers focusing on the financial implications of her situation. Some expressed outrage at the punitive measures taken by the hospital management, viewing it as an unethical practice that penalizes employees who have already suffered trauma in the line of duty. “How can they justify denying you your PTO after everything you’ve been through?” one commenter asked, encapsulating the sentiments of those who saw the employer’s actions as especially callous.

Others were equally concerned about the psychological toll such an environment can take on healthcare workers. The employee’s experience of being physically attacked on the job resonated deeply with many who understand the risks involved in psychiatric care. “This is a systemic issue that needs to be addressed—workers shouldn’t have to choose between their health and their job,” another reader noted, highlighting the broader implications of workplace safety in healthcare.

As the story unfolds, it raises questions surrounding employee rights and corporate ethics within the healthcare sector. The employee, now facing both a financial loss and a professional setback, feels the weight of her decision to leave has resulted in severe consequences far beyond her physical workplace. Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who dedicate their lives to caring for others, often at great personal cost.
