Price per drawer on a rolling tool chest swings from $39.90 to $108.57 depending on which manufacturer’s line you buy into, and drawer count alone tells you almost nothing about which one is the better deal. We pulled current list prices and published specs across six chests from Craftsman, Husky, Milwaukee, and DeWalt, brands that post real drawer counts, weight capacities, and dimensions rather than vague marketing copy, and did the arithmetic ourselves. The results aren’t intuitive: the priciest chest per drawer isn’t the biggest, and the cheapest per drawer isn’t the flimsiest. Load rating turns out to matter as much as sticker price once you look at what each drawer is actually rated to hold. If you’re stocking a home garage rather than a working shop bay, the math changes again, and the cheapest option on paper is often the right call. None of these six chests is the cheapest thing you can buy at a hardware store; they’re the mid-range and premium lines where manufacturers actually publish enough detail to run the numbers, which is exactly why the comparison is worth doing before you swipe a card on whichever one looks biggest in the showroom.
Craftsman S2000 52-in. 10-Drawer: $39.90 a Drawer
At $399, Craftsman’s 52-inch 10-drawer rolling cabinet comes out the cheapest per drawer of anything we checked. Each drawer’s full-extension slide is rated for 100 pounds, and the cabinet carries a 1,500-pound overall load rating: solid for hand tools and sockets, but noticeably lower than the 2,500-to-3,000-pound ratings on the Milwaukee and Husky heavy-duty lines below. If you’re organizing a home garage rather than loading a cabinet with engine parts, this is hard to beat on cost.
Husky 27-in. 5-Drawer Standard Duty: $43.80 a Drawer
At $219, Husky’s compact 5-drawer chest is the smallest and cheapest unit in this set outright, with drawer glides rated for 100 pounds each and 1,000 pounds overall. Its price per drawer lands close to the Craftsman above it, which tracks, since both use similar 100-pound slide hardware. Where it actually differs is footprint: at 27 inches wide, it fits where a 52-inch cabinet won’t, which matters more than the spreadsheet math if your garage is tight on space.
Husky 56-in. 23-Drawer Heavy Duty Combo: $65.13 a Drawer
Jump to Husky’s 56-inch, 23-drawer chest-and-cabinet combo and the price climbs to $1,498, but so does what each drawer can hold: 120 pounds per drawer on soft-close ball-bearing slides, with a 3,000-pound overall rating, double the Craftsman’s. That’s the pattern worth noticing across this whole comparison. Crossing from standard-duty to heavy-duty hardware roughly doubles the per-drawer weight rating, and the per-drawer price follows it upward, though not in lockstep.
Milwaukee 41-in. 18-Drawer High Capacity: $72.11 a Drawer
Milwaukee’s 41-inch, 18-drawer chest runs $1,298 with the same 120-pound-per-drawer, soft-close slide rating as the Husky above it, and a 2,500-pound total capacity. It’s built on 18-gauge steel with a 6-gauge angle-iron base frame, heavier-gauge steel than the sub-$500 chests use, which is a real part of what the premium is buying.
Milwaukee 36-in. 12-Drawer Combo: $82.32 a Drawer
The smaller Milwaukee combo, $987.80 for 12 drawers rated at 120 pounds each and 1,800 pounds total, costs more per drawer than its bigger 18-drawer sibling. Fewer drawers spread the same chest-and-cabinet hardware (hinges, casters, the built-in power strip) across a smaller count, which is the general rule with rolling chests: the biggest configuration in a manufacturer’s own lineup is usually the best per-drawer value, not the smallest.
DeWalt 52-in. 8-Drawer Tool Cabinet: $108.57 a Drawer
DeWalt’s 52-inch cabinet has the fewest drawers of any 52-inch-wide unit here, just 8, for $868.56, which pushes its per-drawer cost highest in this comparison despite a caster system rated to 2,000 pounds. The individual drawers are rated 100 to 150 pounds depending on position, competitive with everything else here, but you’re paying full-size-cabinet money for roughly a third fewer drawers than the Craftsman at the same 52-inch width.
Width and price tell you almost nothing on their own. The number that actually predicts value is how many drawers a manufacturer packs into a given footprint, and load rating is the variable most buyers skip until a drawer full of sockets tears itself off the slides — run the same per-drawer math before you buy anything with a rolling base, because the sticker on the front of the box is measuring the wrong thing.
