This Man’s Wife Hated How Their Dishwasher Looked, So He Secretly Modified the Front Panel to Perfectly Disguise It as a Matching Kitchen Cabinet

Every kitchen has at least one appliance that never quite matches the rest of the room, and for one homeowner, the dishwasher had become a running joke in his marriage. Creator @kolterwinton shared a reel explaining that his wife had complained for months about the stainless steel dishwasher sticking out against their custom cabinetry, so he quietly set out to fix it himself, captioning the project with a note that he now apparently needs to “hide dishwashers” for a living.

Rather than replacing the appliance with a pricier panel-ready model, he built and attached a custom front panel designed to mimic the surrounding cabinet doors almost perfectly, down to the color, the trim, and the hardware. The reel has since raised a question a lot of homeowners have quietly asked themselves: can you really disguise a standard dishwasher without buying an entirely new one?

Appliance manufacturers have actually been selling “panel-ready” dishwashers, refrigerators, and even range hoods for years precisely because of this complaint. These models come without a finished front at all, leaving a blank frame that a homeowner or contractor fills with a custom panel cut to match the kitchen’s existing cabinet doors. The catch is cost: panel-ready dishwashers typically run $200 to $600 more than a comparable stainless steel model, and that’s before paying a cabinet shop to fabricate a matching panel, which can add another $150 to $400 depending on the material and finish.

For homeowners who already own a standard dishwasher and don’t want to replace it, a DIY retrofit panel like the one in this reel is a far cheaper route. Most dishwashers have a routed channel or mounting brackets on the front designed to accept a decorative panel insert, a feature many owners never realize exists because the appliance usually ships with a plain stainless or black panel pre-installed. Swapping it typically requires only a screwdriver, a panel cut to the dishwasher manufacturer’s specified dimensions, and matching cabinet-grade paint or stain.

Getting the color and finish to truly disappear into the surrounding cabinetry is the hardest part of the job. Kitchen designers recommend bringing a cabinet door sample directly to the paint or stain counter rather than trying to match it from memory, since lighting and existing wear can shift how a finish reads. A test panel on a scrap piece of wood, left to cure for a few days under the kitchen’s actual lighting, is the standard way professionals confirm a match before committing to the real panel.

Hardware is the other detail that sells the illusion. Using the same pulls or knobs found on the rest of the kitchen’s cabinets, placed at a matching height, is what makes a disguised dishwasher read as a cabinet at a glance rather than an obvious retrofit. Many DIYers skip this step and end up with a panel that matches in color but still looks like an appliance because the hardware gives it away.

Beyond the aesthetics, cabinet-matched dishwasher panels have become popular enough that some real estate agents now flag them as a subtle value-add during showings, since a kitchen with no visible appliances aside from a range reads as more custom and higher-end to prospective buyers. It’s a small project with an outsized visual impact, which likely explains why this particular reel struck a nerve with millions of viewers who recognized the exact same complaint from their own kitchens.
